  • VEPro 7 help needed...

On sessions in Pro Tools and Logic Pro:

If I create one instance of VEPro 7 I encounter intense pops and clicks in the audio signal. (buffer setting 512 and 1024)

If I add a second instance of VEPro 7 (same session, same VI, same buffer settings) the pops and clicks are much less on the second instance of VEPro 7

If I add a third instance of VEPro 7 (same VI, same buffer settings) the pops and clicks are gone on the third instance of VEPro7

What is going on? I want one instance to have no pops and clicks!

    Set up details...

VEPro 7 (latest update) installed on both computers.

Ethernet via direct crossover CAT 6 cable (no switch)

    Computers:

    MacPro(2019): 16 core Intel, 96GB RAM,

    2TB system SSD, MacOS 12.7.6

Data drives: 3 2TB Samsung EVO 860 SSDs (internal via Sonnet Flex3 chassis)

PC: AMD 3900XT 12core ASUS Rog Strix, 64GB DDR4 RAM, Windows 10 (latest)

Libraries on: 6 SSDs Samsung EVO 860, 2TB ea. (all healthy approx 50% full)

    PCIe cards (Mac):

    Avid HDX

UA Octo PCIe Accelerator (UA plug-ins)

    Sonnet 4xUSB 3.0 card

    DAW(s):

    ProTools 2024.10.1

    Logic Pro v10.7

    Audio Interfaces:

    Avid HD i/o (ProTools)

MOTU 828 mk3 USB (system audio and Logic)

  • I would start with ethernet switch and cables. Sounds like networking issues to me.

There are many variables. Try to minimize them until you find the source.

Project sample rate same as audio interface?

Add buffers to you VEP instance?

Could also test by running VEP7 as a local host on your DAW. Same issue?

Thank you for your thoughts on this. It’s been frustrating.

    A couple details to add:

Im using a crossover CAT 6 cable (new and tested)

Internet is not connected on either computer (Wi Fi or Ethernet)

Same behavior with a passive 1Gbs switch

    Same behavior at 44.1, 48, 88.2 and 96

Buffer settings of 1024 + are only slightly better

Changing VEP audio in / out makes no difference

I hired a network tech to test/diagnose my LAN -(Ping and Streaming tests) no issues are seen with any of my hardware.

This happens with Logic Pro, Pro Tools and Cubase sessions

This happens with Avid, Apogee and MOTU interfaces

VEPro 7 running locally- no pops and clicks or other issues!!

    Question:

Could this be a Mac OS 12 - Windows 10 issue?

  • Few things I would try

Ditch the crossover cable. Unless you nic's are ancient, you dont need it. Modern NICs will autosense and adjust. Remove that variable.

Make sure everyone is talking at the same sample rate.

Make sure your USB interface cable isn't junk, or too long. I actually had issues with RME device cause I wasnt using the original cable it came with.

Turn off real time virus scan on VEP, samples, etc.

    Disable Wi-Fi

Finally, or first, get the ethernet and chipset drivers for your motherboard directly from Intel. I had this happen in the past and the Intel drivers solved it.
