  • Sibelius Dimension Strings I vs II

Starting a score I still use the "old" great sounding VIPRO-Dimension Strings (along all the Synchron strings ), using the studio-dimension-strings in Sibelius is still a puzzle for me,

but my question is : there is an Sibelius-instrument choice between VSL Dimension Strings I and VSL Dimension Strings II.... (no III), as far as I am concerned I only need one of them ?? Is it maybe a relict from old bundle-names ?

  • Hello whbemmel_4785!

I'm not sure if I understand your question.
If you want to trigger Dimension Strings I, add [VSL Dimension Strings I] instruments in Sibelius and the "Dimension..." programs on the Manual Sound Sets page.
If you want to trigger Dimension Strings II, add [VSL Dimension Strings II] instruments in Sibelius and the "Dimension... II" programs on the Manual Sound Sets page.
If you want to trigger them both and switch between senza sordino and con sordino, you can do as described in the Sibelius Integration manual.

    Hi Andy !

I am using I + II + III (sul tasto) VIPRO without problems, switching through sib articulations works perfect, the studio version is not working nicely with Sibelius, but that's no problem for me ,

it is just a bureaucratic little thing , using one staff with VSL Dim I - instrument works for all the 3 (normal, mute & tasto), so in my humble perception there is no need for a Dim II instrument in the Vianna House Style

Another thing,my pppp pizzicato's are almost as loud as ff (f.e. in the solo violin)

Question : is it possible for me to make changes in the way the samples volume rects to different dynamic articulations ?

I don't mean "in general" , but for every specific VSL instrument and then every specific sound ( Pizzi, stacc, sus etc etc)

  • The [VSL Dimension Strings II] instruments are for projects where you only want to trigger Dimension Strings II and not Dimension Strings I. So they are not redundant - especially for users that only have Dimension Strings II, but not Dimension Strings I.

    >> the studio version is not working nicely with Sibelius, but that's no problem for me

=> Studio Dimension Strings are working fine with Sibelius here. If you want us to take a look into your problem, please send a detailed description and screenshots to support@vsl.co.at.

    >> Another thing,my pppp pizzicato's are almost as loud as ff (f.e. in the solo violin)

=> Maybe you didn't load the correct preset. To be better able to look into this, please send the following screenshots to support@vsl.co.at.
    - Sibelius "Add or Remove Instruments" menu
    - Sibelius mixer
    - Sibelius Playback Devices menu
    - Sibelius Manual Sound Sets page of all loaded devices
    - Vienna Ensemble showing one of the instruments that doesn't work correctly

    >> Question : is it possible for me to make changes in the way the samples volume rects to different dynamic articulations ?

=> With Vienna Instruments Pro you can extend the dynamic range of single slots under Advanced/Edit/Velocity Curve.

Synchron Violin Solo : Pizzi/regular/agile are not responding to Vel-XF changes in VelFX sus MOD-preset, while they are in Velo-FX MOD- preset, while the manual pdf says " The "XF" and "XF sus" factory presets will work equally."

    that's what made me wondering

Yes, that's nice working ! is that also possible in the synchro player ? I couldn't find it in the slot editor....

  • Pizzicatos, regular long notes and agile legatos all work fine with Synchron Solo Strings VelXF presets here. The dynamics respond correctly. If you want me to take a closer look at your problem, please send the following screenshots to support@vsl.co.at.
    - Sibelius "Add or Remove Instruments" menu
    - Sibelius mixer
    - Sibelius Playback Devices menu
    - Sibelius Manual Sound Sets page of all loaded devices

With Synchron Player you can control the general dynamic range of your preset with the Dynamic Range fader. It's not possible to make individual dynamic range settings for every slot though.
