Not very nice?
Every company has to make business decisions, devoting resources judiciously with a steady eye on the need for financial health. Dorico is not part of VSL, but they have "nicely" reached a working partnership to benefit both customer bases. VSL does not owe us expression maps for Dorico. It is nice of them to provide us any of them.
With the complexity of the DImension Strings, I suppose it did not make sense to them to create such a vast, complex expression map. I would also imagine there are two reasons for this, first the man-hours diverted from creating libraries to make and maintain it, and second the map would be so bloated as make Dorico choke. In the end these benefit neither customer base.
I could be wrong,, but to me a judgment of "not very nice" does not fit the situation.
Yes to all of this, I could not have said it better myself! VSL has absolutely nothing to do with Dorico or Steinberg. They are completely different companies, and VSL does not “owe us” anything in that regard.
VSL has been very kind to go pretty far out of their way and provide us so many tools to utilize their libraries over the years in various third-party software’s (finale, Sibelius, Dorico, cubase, etc.). I do not see any other virtual instrument library company creating as much content to support their product as VSL does. we should be very thankful for what we are getting from them.
These expression maps and tools to utilize their libraries within a third-party company takes a massive amount of time to create. That is time that someone has to be paid to do so, and the company is not receiving any compensation in return for this.
I like to think of VSL providing us with expression maps as a simple “ thank you” for investing in us. Not an obligation on their behalf.
I do understand the disappointment of dimension strings not being a library that is supported at this time with expression maps, as my personal favorite string library from VSL is the Appassionata strings which are also not supported with Dorico expression maps. Is it sad? Yes, but I would have no right to be upset with VSL for that. they’re already going out of their way doing us a favor by providing what they do provide.
I’m personally quite grateful for all of the tools that have been provided throughout the years by the VSL team, and I certainly do hope that they see the value that those tools add to their products and find room to continue to give us what they can.
