  • Timbales: Cáscara technique

I can't find the timbales technique "Cáscara" (= "on the side") or a similar sound anywhere (synchron and studio series). Does anyone have an idea where I can find something in one of the series that will help me? (I have all the drum sounds from VSL, but I still don't have a proper overview.)

(By the way: I would be very happy with a library of Latin percussion around Salsa)

  • Hello Andreas!

Timbales are included in Synchron Percussion III under 06 SY Percussion - Latin Percussion/23 Timbales - LP. Rim and rimshot sounds are included as well. You can find details about the mapping in the instrument manual and if look at the key info of Synchron Player (keyboard button at the top of the player).
    https://www.vsl.co.at/instruments/synchron/percussion-iii#timbales-lp

You will also find other latin percussion instruments in the folder mentioned above.

    Best regards,
    Andi

    Hi Andi,

    thank you for your answer!

But rim and rimshot is not the same as cáscara. I was looking for the typical cáscara sound like in this video about minute 1:30

. Some rim sounds of VSL resemble a bit to the cáscara sound, but they are not really what I'm looking for.

  • Isn’t the “Shell shaft” and “Shell tip” what you looking for?

  • Hello Andreas!

These sounds are also included under "Shell shaft" and "Shell tip".

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Yes, I thought the same thing until realizing what Andi just said, so I have recently begun migrating to the Synchron Percussion Timbales as my first choice in most contexts, and NI Spotlight Cuba for others (it has five different sets, at different pitches), with all others now falling by the wayside.

As there will be more World Percussion from VSL later this year, I am wondering if they will sample a more traditional vintage-style "deep shell" model for that one. It would make a nice contrast and would mean we would only need VSL going forward, for those of us who sometimes need a choice of two different characteristic sounds for timbales.
