  • One more instrument request: cimbalom

    The eastern European folk instrument (rather like a large dulcimer), not to be confused with cembalo (harpsichord). Used in contemporary classical works such as Boulez's "Repons" and Andriessen's "Mausoleum". While the VSL prepared piano's "stick" patches (among my fave VSL patches) approach in sonic approximation, a VSL cimbalom package would be a very welcome addition.

    Tschuss,

    Carl.

    Hi, have you seen the one from Spitfire (Originals Series)? It is pretty good for the cheap price and currently only 17 EUR. I have and like it.

    On the other hand … a Synchron FX Piano is just around the corner … And „maybe“ it has some similar soundpatch(es) and will be a great addition to the Spitfire Purchase. I bought some Vouchers for this one as I think it will be a highlight. VSL spent quite some time for research. Lets see (mid of january)

    Best, Lars

    Thanks for the suggestion. Any technical complications from using multiple sample bank platforms? Maybe I'll check it out.

    Not really, you just spend more time updating 😁

    Fun fact: The vernacular brother of the Concert Cimbalom, the so-called "Hackbrett", was central part of my very first commercial sample library. The whole collection was called "Austrian Sound Library", in short: ASL. 8-)

    -> https://www.chickensys.com/products2/sounds/floppy/austrian.html

    I developed it around 1990 for a hardware platform, namely the EPS/ASR samplers from Ensoniq - a highly innovative manufacturer of electronic music instruments that has not been around for quite some time now. They had a small but very passionate user base in an era when Akai samplers were considered the industry standard.

  • Silly question. Why have you not founded something like VSL? You had the Expertise and made the first step with ASL already. Too risky?

  • Of course, cimbaloms vary a bit between countries and regions. And though they aren't the same thing as a Hammered Dulcimer (at least, as it is known in British and American folk circles), they are sometimes referred to as Eastern European Hammered Dulcimers, and some cimbalom libraries are just called Dulcimer, such as the one from Cinesamples World Series.

    Dennis at Bolder Sounds was probably the first to deep-sample several cimbalom and hammered dulcimer models, for Kontakt. Since that time, UVI World Suite has added somewhat more detailed patches for Hungarian Cymbalum and Moldovian Cymbalum.

    The Spitfire Cimbalom is my top choice for the past few years, but I think it's the one that got repackaged for the Originals series and I haven't been terribly thrilled with the non-Kontant versions of things from them.

    I would love for VSL to do a cimbalom or two. I have some arrangements in mind, that I have sketched roughly without fleshing out as I'd rather wait until there is a top-tier library available to render them.

    Completely different scale. This was neither my intention nor my vision, back then. But if you look at VSL as a band, I was at least a founding member (about 10 years later). 😉
