  • Studio Saxophone dynamics

I'm using Dorico Wizard. The wizard set up all the playback everything, I changed nothing. I'm writing for bari and piano right now.

Let's say the full dynamic range of the instrument is 1-10. I know what it's capable of. I get 4-6 when writing ppp to fff. Hairpins have absolutely no effect. I haven't gotten as far as testing accents, but I'm afraid to do it.

It's not usable like this. Can I fix it? What are we doing here?

    Thank you for your time,

    Clare

If I could edit or delete/repost this to remove "what are we doing, here" I would. I apologize for the frustrated tone of that.

  • Hello Clare!

Hairpins under single notes can only have an effect when VelXF is turned on. You can learn more about controlling dynamics of our instruments with Dorico here:
    https://www.vsl.co.at/tutorials/guides/dorico-integration/quickguide#optimization

The dynamic range in the player is the same dynamic range that we have recorded the instrument with. Usually we don't record ppp or fff. Anyway, you can expand the dynamic range if you add the "Dynamic Range" fader to your preset. This can be done on the CONTROL page. It is a relatively new feature of our player and is included by default in the presets of our newer instruments.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Okay, turned it on, getting dynamics. Thank you.

I missed some lessons. I understand that in order to use this I have to know some things about this new thing.

I'm just trying to get away from Sibelius, into this better world, and have similar playback functionality I had there without the Sibelius struggle. I hope one day I'll have to be conserving resources for a large demo, but I'm just writing some chamber music here.

I'll do more homework, but quick question because I want to write something right now:

Bari Sax and Piano. I have Studio Saxes and Yamaha CFX. For the Synchron Player should I be loading VelFX sus, VelFX, or Velocity? Just want to compose it, and export some mp3s and scores as I go.

Others are asking the same question, but I don't know what they're working on. So for smaller ensembles where resources aren't a problem, which do you recommend?

Thank you for your time, Andi.

  • Hello Clare!

For the Studio Saxophones please use the "Velocity" expression maps. If you are unsure, you can always check out which presets work with a Dorico expression map, in the information provided with the expression map.

    Best regards,
    Andi
