  • Prevent VEP from stealing window focus (on Mac)?

I am running a local-machine version of VEP alongside Dorico and sometimes Cubase. I have found that every several minutes or so that VEP appears to autosave the running server project. However, it invariably also steals window/keyboard/mouse focus to do this. It can be pretty frustrating when working in Dorico and then I have to switch back. Is there some way of making it so that VEP remains in the background for all tasks unless I access it directly? I don't need it in the foreground when it does an autosave every now and then.

Specs - running VEP Server 7.3 on MacOS Ventura 13.6.1.

Edit - turns out I don't even have autosave enabled in the preferences! -

I discovered it is every time that I go to save in Dorico, or that Dorico autosaves (because I have it coupled, which I am fine with). Again, though, I don't need VEP to take the foreground when that happens.

I have the same setup also on MBP (M1Max) including the instances being coupled in Dorico. Interesting enough I do not have your issue but a similar but less frequent one. When I connect a VE Pro instance in Dorico the focus jumps to VE Pro which I also do not want. I want to stay in the Dorico VST rack.

Can I ask what OS version you're running? I'm probably due for an upgrade. My issue in particular is quite annoying because it happens about every 5 minutes or so. It will not hestitate doing so while I'm in the middle of typing text into a popover, or in the midst of note entry – so when VEP pops to the foreground, it not only distracts me but completely takes over my keyboard so I have to start over what I was doing. I hope we can figure out whatever the issue is. My google research seems to suggests it's app specific and therefore on the developer. Wondering if VSL has any insight as to how we can force VEP to remain in the background at all times unless manually brought to the foreground by the user.

  • I just updated from Sonoma to Sequoia this week. No difference between the two.

Maybe open a ticket for this. My issue is annoying but I do not connect manually a lot. So it happens maybe once a week.

On the other hand I think it is probably a Dorico or more general Steinberg VST rack issue. I have another small annoying thing with Dorico for some projects with VE Pro in coupled mode. For one instance VE keeps generating and connecting to its own instance generated at the bottom of my VE instances list although it is actually already available in my project. The reason is probably that I renamed the instance in VE Pro and Dorico still has the old link stored somewhere. I deconnected and reconnected to the correct one but that does not help. I also replaced the already available instance with the one generated by VE Pro but that also does not help. Next time I open the project it generates a new version again.

It even generates a muted strings instance which is not in the VST rack in Dorico anymore in one project. I used it earlier for a muted voice but now integrated the muted and regular strings in one VSL SY preset. So I do not need it anymore. So it is probably Dorico which does not properly update.
