I'm testing out prime and I am simply astonished at how low the volume of most items is. At standard settings I can hardly get above -30dB for the tutti items and -40dB for the solo instruments; this on the protools volume meters. Can anyone concur or tell me what is the mystery here?

Hi! All instruments are leveled against each other. The loudest instruments on maximum dynamics reach close to 0 dB. You can always add gain to an instrument, but you would want your total orchestral mix to stay free of clipping.
And please remember: A solo flute or harp playing super soft will not be anywhere close to 0 dB but more like -30 or -40 dB.

Thanks Andreas! I understand that this is perfectly OK for classical or cinematic compositions, but if you want to use certain instruments in a pop production the situation becomes totally different. I've never had any problems with my VI libraries nor with their synchron-ed versions.
Cheers, Bob.

Add gain on your track in the DAW. You can always add more gain - removing clipping from a signal is hard.
