  • VEP7 with Dorico - workflow?

    Hi there,

I'm looking to simplify my Dorico orchestral template which is currently a combination of NotePerformer (with Synchron NPPEs!) plus a handful of separate VSTs including Synchron, VI Pro, Kontakt, UVI, Spitfire etc which I primarily use for non-orchestral instruments, advanced percussion, as well as extended techniques. The Dorico project file (as a blank template without any added music) has really ballooned out of control - starting at around ~28MB. I just tested reducing it down to only NP and a single VST instance of VEP7 and it immediately dropped the file size down to around ~2MB, huge difference to start with.

I'd like to make it so when I load VEP in the background prior to my Dorico project template, that it will automatically connect.

Confused whether or not I should save this VEP template project as a "Server Project" or "Instance Project," since both options are available and they seem similar. For what it's worth I'm running this all on a local machine (Mac).

Also, with instances, is it better to keep as many instruments as possible contained in one? I am going to adjust my expression maps to work with midi channels so I intend to populate my instances accordingly - meaning presumably 16 instruments per instance.

Or would it be better to create separate instances for each instrument type? (i.e., an instance for my different pianos, separate instance for percussion, etc.).

Does every instance require another VST plugin to be loaded in Dorico?

If I wish to make changes to a VEP project which are specific to my composition, and save that as a new separate project (I would organize with my Dorico project file), when I go to reload the project files at a later date will Dorico see and link up correctly? Not sure what Dorico requires to correctly sync – because I also would like to create a playback template around VEP and hoping with it loaded in the background, as long as the instance has the same name, it will connect?

    Thank you!
