  • How to setup VEP 7 instruments in Cubase without using Rack Instrument?

    Hey guys,

The only way I know to hook up different instruments to one instance of VEP in Cubase is by using a Rack Instrument and load the VEP instance on it. I wouldn't like to just use multiple MIDI tracks routed to an Instrument Track because I'd like to have different inserts on each instrument, so I need separate audio signal for each instrument.

The problem with using a Rack Instrument is that in Cubase you cannot import it from different projects (I think it's a bug): https://forums.steinberg.net/t/import-tracks-does-not-work-with-the-rack-instruments/707075/8

So I'm looking for an alternative. Does anyone has an idea please? I'm still new to it so I'm sorry if it's obvious and I'm missing it.

    Thanks a lot in advance!

create a instrument track with VEP then with the instrument track selected create midi track for other midi channel, you will see that you midi track gonna follow the midi channel of your instrument track.

or use Instrument track with "all" midi channel if your different midi files are not in the same place...

  • Yes but then the audio signal will be only in the Instrument Track with VEP, and I won't be able to add inserts to the different channels (because they're just MIDI), or I misunderstood you? Thanks

    Hi @Omer1,

VE Pro can utilize multiple outputs, so you can use separate audio FX inserts on each instrument output.

Hey Andreas, thanks for your reply. In your screenshot aren't you using a Rack Instrument for VEP? Thanks

Yes - Using Rack Instruments does NOT prevent you from utilizing separate audio outputs = separate audio signals for each instrument. Please find more information about routing in the VE Pro manual. We have separate sections for all major sequencers.

My question was specifically about an alternative for an instrument rack, because Cubase won't let you import instrument racks (please see my post). Is there an alternative please? If this is the conventional way that everyone uses I'll just stick to it

  • You can do the same with an instrument track, but then you have to do more routing by hand, and it's a bit messy, to be honest. I suggest you stick with rack instruments.
