  • M3 MacBook Pro external SSD issue solved

    VSL and Friends,

In another post, I brought up some issues I was having when streaming samples from an external SSD on my M3 MacBook Pro. For some reason the external SSD would sometimes register as connected as USB 3.1 instead of Thunderbolt. This caused many issues when streaming the VSL samples, and would often cause crashes (Finder would even crash!).

Here's the fix: The external SSD needs to be connected FIRST before other USB peripherals like MIDI controllers, audio interfaces and the like. If the SSD is connected first, it always shows in system information as a Thunderbolt connection, and no problems ensue. If it is connected AFTER the other devices, things go haywire. It's a really strange Apple bug. I was also able to confirm this with a friend who has a different brand external SSD and M3 machine.

So there's the fix if anyone was having a similar issue! Connect SSD first, other things second. 😅

    Hello, Stephen,

How much unified memory is needed for a VST like, let's say, Fazioli, to run smoothly with 6~7 mics, without cracks or pops whatsoever?

I'm running a W11 PC with 64 GB and an intel i9 11900KF with a dedicated soundboard (RME HSDPe AIO) and quite happy with my performance (2000-2200 voices before cracking/popping) and latencies. I am considering switching to Mac just because fan noise...

  • If you're only running the Fazioli I'd still try and get at least 64gb and as many CPU cores as possible.
