  • FL Studio 2024, M3 Max, Sonoma 14.5, Beach Ball of Death with VSL

I'm not sure where to start, but when I'm not too far into a project I end up triggering something that causes the pinwheel of death. This only seems to happen when I have VSL plugins active. I've only tried with the Synchron plugins.

I have a Nov 2023 M3 Max 64 GB with 4TB. It wasn't until recently that the problem seemed to appear, perhaps related to a Synchron update?

Scenarios that have triggered the pinwheel:

    • Double-stopping the playback (first stop releases all playing notes, second stops audio and then pinwheels)
    • Opening an export audio dialog (just before the export options dialog appears, pinwheel starts. Perhaps the system is querying the plugin(s) for export context and something is halting there? Maybe a full audio halt?)

    The current setup is:

    • VST3 plugins
    • Various orchestral instruments, strings, brass, flutes, etc. It doesn't appear to be a specific offending instrument.

    Things I tried:

    • I was using FL Studio 21, I upgraded to 2024. Still the problem exists.
    • Was using a previous version of Sonoma (14.1? don't recall), so updated to 14.5. Still problem exists.
    • Having "Enable Multicore Processing" either checked or unchecked in Synchron Player > Preferences > Engine. Problem still occurs.
    • Checked everything is at 48000

Also, it seems like once the plugins have reached a point, they just decide from that point on to have this issue. If I go step by step, save at each step, things go ok, but in short time the problem will occur. I don't recall having this issue on an M1. It could be related to M3 chip which I haven't really used with much depth until now.

Is it possible the recent VSL update (with the smaller piano filesizes) may be related caused this? How would I roll this back to see if that will fix?

    Thanks,

    Mark

  • I suspect the issue may be related to the "Default Audio Device" on the MacBook. When I plug in and use a "Scarlet 2i2", it does not appear to produce the spinning ball of death. (I did, however, manage to get a hard crash with the "Scarlet 2i2" one time when submitting an audio export. The system was able to produce two crash reports this time around, not certain they are related to the core issue however).

  • You can check in "Activity Monitor" if "Memory/swap used" is not at zero

If so try to reboot to clear memory.

There is no problem with Logic Pro !

I have a full VSL orchestra using MIR PRO 3D in 7.0.2 playing a tutti on my earphone using max 25 % of cpu

Oops : I have just notice that I use 89 GB of memory on my 128 GB !!!
