  • Powerhouse GPU Causing CPU Spikes in Cubase 13

Issue: I encounter CPU spikes and audio dropouts in Cubase 13 when playing a simple project with two VIs connected to VE Pro.

    Context:

I am demoing MIR Pro 3D and the Powerhouse add-on. The system is a Mac Pro M2 Ultra. When enabling GPU Power in MIR Pro 3D, the Cubase project starts playing a single MIDI track with a VE Pro instance. The moment a second instrument plays, the CPU in Cubase spikes and an audible pop is heard.

The above does not occur with the GPU Power in MIR disabled.

Has anyone experienced similar issues? The demo project in Cubase is very simple, just two instrument tracks coming from VE Pro as a test. I haven't even loaded any larger project yet, so this is surprising.

Would love to see if this is a specific issue on my setup, or a known issue with a workaround. I'd love to make use of the extra GPU processing on this system.

  • I’m only on a M1 Ultra but yet to observe anything like this in Logic.

    Just a beginner
  • Hi @Jurgen Beck,

I forwarded your issue to VSL's development team, and they answered, "It would really not be related to the M1 or M2 in this case, more of an issue with how the fusion convolver is working. What kind of latency are we talking about? ASIO Guard settings?"

    Kind regards,

    Kind regards,

Thanks for forwarding this to your dev group!

Just for reference, see the attached screenshots of the Cubase Studio Setups. One is for Omnibus as the ASIO Driver, the other for a Dante I/O. I had the ASIO-Guard disabled, which is a left over from a previous system I just transferred from to this new Mac Pro. It previously was the only way to get stable operations.

However, after turning it on and setting it to "high," the CPU spikes using MIR GPU Power are gone. So, it seems that ASIO-Guard is required, at least in my case.

I'll report back in if anything else develops once I have my entire template loaded up.

    Appreciate the quick response!

  • Quick follow-up: Activating ASIO-Guard and choosing "low" for the level also avoids the CPU spikes.

    Thanks for the update!

Did you also try set MIR 3D's own buffers to 0 (zero)? According to seasoned users this helps a lot with certain non-Apple GPUs. Might be wort trying if it helps in your case, too.

Hi, @Jurgen Beck. Can you provide more details about your DAW setup and settings? Is ASIO guard turned on?

So you couldn't even be bothered to read the rest of his posts in this very short thread?

A quick follow-up from my end: it is indeed a 'problem solved' thread (yet the thread is open), and I was looking for any other open issues that might be related and yet unsolved.

And yes, an ASIO guard, for now, is the requirement for a better workflow experience thus it must be activated.
