  • How do you balance Synchron and choose mics?

I realize this is two questions, but I'm really interested in how others are utilizing the mic positions as well as, how are you getting to a comfortable balance position in your template?

I have been working with libraries of all sorts for decades now, but I've also always been expanding my palette of sounds as well. Over the past couple of years, I started investing in Synchron, and recently, I've nearly completed my Synchron collection with a few exceptions. The thing is, as I create a new template based first on Synchron and a couple synchronized libraries, I feel a little lost as to how I should balance it all. It seems like the best thing to do, would be to mock-up some pieces, utilizing as many instruments as I can. Any thoughts on this?

At the same time, I start to think, if I find a good balance with the Synchron orchestra, but then decide I want to try different mic positions.... wow, that's a LOT of tracks to go back into VE Pro to adjust.

I'd be happy to hear any input you guys have regarding any of this, thank you.

  • When you use one of the presets coming with the library, I understand that all SY and Syzd instruments are balanced by the VSL sound engineers using CC7, volume, to reflect the seating position in a classical orchestra. The position of each instrument group is shown in the overview page for each library on the VSL site. The instruments are also panned to reflect those positions as you can see in the mixing view. In assume that the CC7 setting also takes care of eventual recording level differences of the samples.

The different presets also make a choice of the many microphones to use. So starting with listening to and playing with the different presets and looking at the mikes they use gives you a good overview of the possibilities. From a preset you like you can then start making your own presets.

With respect to the volume balancing I have the impression that the SYzd libraries e.g. Brass is a bit quiet compared to the SY version. I use Syzd Brass if I need more than e.g 2 horns and always have to turn them up to close above 100 (preset is at 80) to match the SY Brass Horns.

The panning works well I have experimented with the 19th century orchestra setup with the 2nd violins opposite the first and celli next to the 1st violins with violas in between 2nd Violins and Celli.
