  • Help on the synchron steinway D274

    Hello everyone,

    I have been a young pianist for about 2 months. I recently bought the full library of the Steinway D 274 and I am playing on a Roland FP-30X piano. Does anyone have any tips for playing really pianissimo? Because the current velocity doesn’t really allow me to have light and soft bass notes and pronounced high notes. Thank you, best regards. I am posting an example of the piece I am working on right now.

  • Hi @Math mtl, have you experimented with the EDIT tab? An adjusted velocity curve might be a good starting point.

  • it's a combination of several factors (based on experience with vsl STEINWAY D & of course other synchrons)

    01 - velocity curve editing : this one is so related to your keyboard behavior, if all you get is fortes and fortissimos then you have to shape the velocity curve like a downward half circle

    02 - dynamic : i find the dynamics on synchron pianos to be a little bit "all-over-the-place", i mean the difference between fortississimos & pianissimos are HUGH (in volume) to the point that i'd say it's a bit unrealistic, but you can turn the dynamic knob down (button left - play window) from 100 to 75 and it'll be much more realistic and pleasant

    03 - the piano itself : i think the synchron steinway is a bright instrument (nothing against it - it's my second favorite and of course a great instrument and the sound is identical to the real thing at synchron stage vienna)

    but if you want it to sound a little calmer and romantic you can use the mixer EQ and FX section, having less high frequencies and a subtle compression would definitely make it a much softer instrument and if you do all the things that i've mentioned plus this one, it'll sound beautiful, i promise

    hope that helps

    you're very welcome friend

  • Hello,

    Sorry for restarting this topic, but since you have the FP-30X, I thought maybe you could help me.

    I have the FP-10 and two standard licenses - Blüthner and Bösendorfer 290 - could you share with me the velocity curve you came up with? Maybe it could match.

  • Late to this thread but I am new to the VSL Steinway D274. Bit the bullet and purchased the full library. I use a Roland FP 30X and spent a couple of weeks tweaking the D274 to try to get the best sound. Then I stumbled upon a Youtube review of the FP 30X and it showed a brief view of the D274 velocity curve. I duplicated it and it made a huge difference as it plays nicely with the FP 30X keyboard. Lots of nuance and at lower velocities and plenty of volume at the upper end of the curve.

    I modified the Player preset as seen here, for headphones:

    I also have a version that I use with a quadriphonic speaker set up. The only tweak is that I send Main-C and Surround microphones to the second output channel for the rear speakers. It sounds pretty good in the room.

    The velocity curve I use is here (with the code below).

    {
    "data": "[[0.0,1.0],[0.056213,0.928057],[0.121302,0.83813],[0.180473,0.769784],[0.239645,0.701439],[0.298817,0.640288],[0.360947,0.582734],[0.43491,0.52518],[0.505917,0.489208],[0.576923,0.438849],[0.636095,0.406475],[0.698225,0.352518],[0.763313,0.298561],[0.825444,0.244604],[0.890533,0.165468],[0.943787,0.0899282],[1.0,0.0]]",
    "id": "velocityMap"
    }

    I hope this useful.
