  • Stop roadblocking VA with release notes

A modal dialog with only "OK" as a choice is something reserved for information the user really, REALLY needs to know and nothing can be done about it. Such as "We just deleted your hard drive because it's the easiest way for us to install our software. You will need to re-install everything else yourself. [OK]"

Vienna Assistant is nice enough as an installer, though the visual design is cluttered. And it's nice the team makes regular updates. And you want to acknowledge all the work they do.

But roadblocking the entire UX every. single. time. they fix or add something to this thing? You have to read their incongruous release notes and target a little OK button before you can do anything else? Rather than making the team look good, this is making it look like rank amateurs.

Stop that. You can give us a link to release notes we can read and appreciate if we want to. But otherwise we launch the installer, immediately see any updates we need to apply, or products we can install or repair, apply them in one click and are done. Your team and their progress may be very dear to you. Stop embarrassing them with these pointless modals. Count clicks and minimize them. Count visual elements to read and minimize them. Technology's value proposition is making things easier and faster.

I disagree, I like the release notes coming up so that I know what has changed. I only go into Vienna Assistant about once a month anyway.

I have other problems with Vienna Assistant, such as the UI "freezing" during the download or install procedure (sometimes for 10-15 minutes on end) where Windows thinks it is "Not Responding" and sometimes requiring me to "resume" failed downloads because the UI freeze has actually impacted the download, but the release notes displaying is not one of those problems.

This should not happen of course, and I have never experienced something like this with the Assistant. It's hard to tell what is responsible for this, but I would start troubleshooting by adding the Assistant to the scan exclusion list of your anti virus (if you are using Windows). AVs usually don't like software that loads and executes other software in the background, so this could cause these kind of issues 😊

  • Thanks, @Ben

It doesn't happen all the time with a download+install, just sometimes, and even though it "freezes", if I wait long enough and don't terminate it, it eventually suddenly starts responding again and is as fast as it normally is.

I'm just using Windows Defender built in to Windows 11 for anti-virus, so if it was the anti-virus, I would assume a lot more people would have this issue since it is the built in software doing this. It could also be related to Backblaze which automatically backs up my entire system to the cloud on a regular basis.
