Here is my performance of James Horner’s “Alfred Moves to Helena” cue from the film “Legends of the Fall.” (1979) Horner is IMHO one of the masters at writing sweeping folk-flavored melodies that stir the emotions. I find this piece very touching and tender.

I used the new Synchron Woodwinds “Lyrical Legato” patches extensively in this piece. And you can really hear the new clarinet 1 clearly in the middle section. The new lyrical legato patches have a smoother legato connection between notes. And the flute and oboe have a lovely expressive legato, perfect for slower melodies.

Interestingly, Horner also introduced a Shakuachi (starting at 1:22) which is a surprising choice, but it adds brilliantly to the traditional folk tune vibe.

The primary VSL libraries are the Synchron Woodwinds & Synchron World Winds. I also used the Synchron Duality Strings Sordino for all the ensemble string parts.

Please feel free to make any comments or ask any question.

    Best wishes, Jay

  • Sounds great!

I think there is a typo in the mp3 filename on Dropbox - "Alfred" is missing the letter f
