  • MIR 3D and Studio One 6.5 multi-channel

    Hi

I have just updated to MIR 3D, and Studio One 6.5 which is now fully multi-channel with built in Dolby Atmos (and binaural monitoring).

But I am a confused how to set up MIR 3D if I wanted to mimic a 7.1 set up.

What do I need to do in MIR such that it output 7.1 to Studio One, and then allow Studio One to do the Dolby Atmos rendering?

How do I know MIR is return 7.1.x to Studio One Main? Is this all taken care of automatically?

    Thanks

Hi Drew! Studio One 6 does make setting up a surround channel configuration quite transparent when starting with the "Mix in Surround" template. This inserts the Dolby Atmos Renderer directly into the Main output of your project.

So, the first step is choosing the correct channel configuration (Bed Format) when setting up your project.

Next, you have to make sure that the channel with the MIR Pro 3D plugin inserted does have a matching output configuration. When using audio tracks, you can choose the "Format" in the Add Tracks dialog.

With MIR Pro 3D it's best to work with dry and close-up stereo signal sources. If you work with virtual instruments, chances are it does have stereo outputs. That won't work since your desired channel configuration is not stereo (2.0) - but surround. Then the instrument track should be set up with a bus channel (Right-Click > "Add Bus Channel") that will match the channel configuration of your session. The MIR Pro 3D plugin can be inserted into this bus track (instead of the track with the sample player).

In MIR Pro 3D, it's only a matter of choosing your venue, positioning your instrument, and selecting the right Microphone for your project (under OUTPUT).

As a last step, you can change "Output" inside the Dolby Atmos Renderer - depending on whether you work with stereo headphones (Binaural) or an actual surround setup.

    Hope this helps!

  • Wow !!!

Thank you so much for the extensive instructions. Never expected that.

    Thank you again !!!!

  • Hmmmm

This is driving me crazy. I had it working briefly a couple of weeks ago, but coming back to it today, I cannot get any virtual instruments working with MIR 3D.

I think I have followed your instructions to the letter.

In addition, when I fist tried following you guidance, I first created an exmpty audio track with a 7.1.2 / 7.1 format. ... before creating an instrument track and bus track for MIR.

This seemed to initialize the project correctly and I could then add Synchron Player and get to play through MIR 3D.

However, nothing I do seems to work today.

When MIR is on a 7.1.2 buss, and the instrument is output to the bus ... I can see on the level bars stereo signlas going into the channel.

And although I can hear the sound of the instrument, but nothing is happening in MIR.

Plus on the Studio One outputs, only a stereo signal appears. There is nothing happening on the Dolby Atmos channels.

I can play a simple audio track directly in MIR 3D, and this does get processed correctly ... all through through to the Dolby Renderer.

I have the latest version of Studio One and MIR.

The problem appears to be more general than just multi-channel set ups.
Even in a conventional stereo setup I cannot send the output of an instrument track to MIR on a bus channel.

The sound passes through the Bus channel, completely unaffected by the MIR Pro / MIR instert.

This problem occurs for any instrument.

However, Audio tracks ARE processed when sent to the Bus Channel with the MIR Pro insert.

Must be something stupid I am doing. 😞

  • This works very well for me.

Just one question: Do I have to add one sub-bus for every track/mic that I am positioning ?

It has some advantages, but it adds lots of sub-bussses..

    Thanks and regards

I'm not sure if I understand the question correctly, but if you meant to ask if a separate instance of MIR should be used for every source (be it an individual instrument or a sub-mixed "ensemble"), the answer is YES. 😊

... but I suspect that I'm misunderstanding the "sub-bus" part of your question ...? 8-/

In my Presonus One I have the following setup according to the above setup:

Mono Recording of a Double Bass Track --> Bus Channel with MIR Pro 3D inserted --> Mix Track 7.1 --> Binaural

I have to repeat this for every Audio Track ( In my case, 5 tracks with different Mic positions (Bridge Piezo, Corpus, Room and 2 effect tracks) .

I was wondering, if there is a way to only use one Bus channel instead of 5.

    Cheers

  • Sorry for the slightly delayed reply, I had to check a few things first, as Studio One isn't a DAW I use on a daily basis.

In principle, S1 "thinks" a bit like Cubase/Nuendo when it comes to the handling of 3D audio tracks: You can't "switch" a channel from a stereo source format to surround or 3D simply by inserting a plug-in that offers these formats. (ProTools, Logic and a few others would work that way.) You will have to create a 3D channel from the very beginning if you plan to use a 3D plug-in like MIR 3D or others in it, even if the audio file you put in this track is just mono or stereo. ... seems to be counter-intuitive at the first glance, but once you grasped the idea, it's just another valid approach to the issue. - In any case: You don't necessarily need to route each Audio Track to a Bus to get 3D capabilities in Studio One.

BUT! This works with Busses and Audio Tracks, but I see no way to do this with an Instrument Track in Studio One. This might either be a restriction of the DAW itself, or just my limited knowledge of its features. ... maybe someone with in-depth knowledge chimes in here.

Another option I use a lot in Nuendo to overcome the restrictive format handling should work in S1, too: The DAW "sees" MIR 3D as alternative panning device, we can instantiate it as a replacement of the standard channel panner. However, for some reason I'm investigating right now this doesn't work for MIR 3D in Studio One at the moment: MIR 3D doesn't appear in the local pull-down menu of S1's mixer. 8-/ Maybe VSL's software engineers find an easy solution to this problem. I'll keep you posted!

    Kind regards,

  • Thanks @Dietz for the research. I will try these options over the weekend. One thing I found out was indeed: It reduces problems if you start with a sourround template from the very beginning. Need to check with Audio vs. Instrument.

Would be great if someone from VSL can give an input about the local pull-down. S1 with the actual 6.5 Version has become a nice DAW, so it is worth the effort.
