  • Hi waveheavy!

"arco" means "played with bow". So it's expected that this command doesn't reset a "tremolo" command, because tremolo also gets played with a bow. To reset a tremolo command, I recommend using "ord." or "natural".

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Yeah, I discovered that just today, using the nat. technique. Thanks.

What about the Sound Sets Editor? The link to it on an old VSL page here is dead.

  • Hi Dave!

Here is a link to the Sibelius Sound Set Editor. Please note that this software is not from us and cannot be supported by us.
    https://www.sibelius.com/download/sse/main.html

Where exactly did you find an outdated link on our website?

  • I'm probably mistaken about the location of the dead link to the editor, it could have been a YouTube provided link to the Sibelius editor. The link was dead, that's for sure. I've yet to find the editor on the Avid website under Sibelius.

Reason I'm still interested is because of switching problems when I use the SE + Vol.1 PRESET. Now that you've explained about the ord. or nat. usage, I can use the SE Vol.1 presets just fine, but not the Plus, which I also have Vol.1.

When using the Sibelius Keypad "Accent" articulation on SE + Vol.1, Violin 1 Preset, it triggers the VSL 'harm-art staccato'. That's a harmonic patch. I instead expected it would trigger something like the detache patch, definitely not harmonics. There's several patches in the SE + Vol.1 that don't get triggered by Sibelius, like col legno, tril1 and tril2, perf-rep legato, etc.

    Sincerely yours,

    Dave

  • Hi Dave!

For the Special Edition PLUS volumes, I recommend using the sound set "VE Special Editin PLUS" and the dedicated VI presets that come with the VSL Soundset Installer for Sibelius. This installer can be found in the Vienna Assistant under Additionals/Notation. If you are still working with our eLicenser software versions, you can download the installer here:
    https://www.vsl.co.at/Notation_Related

How to trigger the various articulations is explained here:

  • I had already downloaded and installed the VSL Soundset Installer for Sibelius (SibeliusSoundsets-WIN-1.0.222.exe). It's the same one in the link you just provided. There is no such folder as "VE Special Edition PLUS" showing in my VE presets pane under Sibelius. (see dropbox linked images below).

I only have access to the following Presets under the Sibelius "Special Edition 6.0" folder:
    1. SE Vol.1 (standard Special Edition presets, which I have)
    2. SE + Vol.1 (SE Vol.1 PLUS presets)

The "SE + Vol.1" folder is what gives me access to the SE Vol.1 PLUS presets, and those are the Violin 1 patches I was talking about in my previoius email.

  • Andi,

I don't have any of the SYNCHRON libraries.

I only have the original Special Edition Vol.1 library, and the 1st PLUS library.

There is no SYNCHRON stuff showing in my VE screen images if you will notice in those image links I sent.

The "How to Trigger Articulations" article you sent me a link to is pointing to SYNCHRON folders with "SE SY Special Edition". If you will look at the screen images I sent, you'll notice under the Sibelius heading I only have access to the "Special Edition 6.0" folder.

  • Hi Dave!

The VI prests from the folder "SE + Vol.1" are correct.
The link to the manual that I have sent on how to trigger articulations is for VI Special Editions AND for SYNCHRON-ized Special Editions. So it's the correct place for you too.

It seems that you didn't load the correct sound set in Sibelius yet. This sound set should get installed by running the VSL Soundset Installer. Does the installer run succesfully? Can you post a screenshot that shows the sound sets that you have available in Sibelius?

    Andi

The VSL Soundset Installer is the file "SibeliusSoundsets-WIN-1.0.222.exe", correct? That's the file that downloaded from the VSL link.

When I execute that file, it automatically installs the Soundsets. It is not giving me any indication of VSL availability on my computer. Remember, I'm using Windows 7.

Below is a screen pic of the only folder where I can find VSL Soundsets pointing to my Special Edition Vol.1, and SE Plus .xml files.

  • Andi,

Here's the latest I discovered. (And thanks for having patience with me on this). Everything underlined below is a setting name, either in VE or in Sibelius.

The SE Vol. 1 PLUS articulations are under the "Vienna Ensemble Special Edition Plus" list in the "Sound set:" box under the "Device:" box.

Somehow I missed it when selecting it in the "Playback Devices" dialog. Still, not everything in the PLUS arts gets triggered, like Detache. Here is a video of Sibelius triggering the PLUS "Violins Orchestral" articulations:

    https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/9j9tit5j2mzk2aka7hpqi/PLUS-Violin-1-Video.mp4?rlkey=rol2e7c2759fog2z14siq2ql4&dl=0

The setup steps I did in Sibelius:

    1. Opened VE Pro and setup an instance, instrument, and arts. under the VE "Sibelius" folder, then "Special Edition 6.0", then "SE + Vol.1", then "Orchestral strings".
    2. Opened Sibelius, add instrument, create score.
    3. Opened Sibelius "Playback Devices" in the Ribbon, selected "Vienna Ensemble Pro" in the "Available devices:" list. Activated the device.
    4. Went to "Manual sound sets" tab; read "Vienna Ensemble Pro" in the "Device:" box. Hit "Show" and 'connect' the VE instance created earlier in Vienna Ensemble Pro.
    5. In the "Sound sets:" box underneath "Vienna Ensemble Pro", selected "VSL Ensemble Special Edition Plus". Then for MIDI channel 1, I chose the "Violins Orchestral" setting, applied it and tested it. The video above is the result.

I think I'm done with this. Thanks for your help. I think that's as many PLUS articulations I'll need in Sibelius.

    Sincerely yours,
    Dave

  • Hi Dave!

Windows 7 cannot be supported from us anymore. Maybe the Soundset Installer doesn't run correctly under Windows 7. Anyway, you can use the pre-installed sound set "VSL Ensemble Special Editin PLUS" instead of the "VE Special Edition PLUS" sound set. It's just an old version of the same sound set.

As far as I can see in your video, everything works as expected. To trigger detache, I would use the Technique Text command "detache".
