  • Question about Digital Performer/VSL/Tool repetition mode

    Hi there!
After watching the VSL PT tutorial DVD for several times, I still don´t get the part where I have to "offset" the notes of the repetition notes on the sequencer. I use Digital Performer 4.12. Everything else is prety clear, except this part where they show you how to do that on Cubase, and I don´t see anywhere on the DP manual how to delay or offset by x ammount of miliseconds (x being dictated by the ammount on the performance tool on repetition mode) on DP. It seems sooooo easy on Cubase... What about DP?
Is this really necessary? If so, Do I have to offset ONLY that first repetition note? If so, I could do it manually. Or, am I supposed to offset the WHOLE group of repeated notes? Or the whole track?
Thank you so much to clear this up for me.

    Saludos,
    Fernando

  • Hi Fernando,

if I remember right, there is no way to set a delay in ms to the whole track in DP, this also surprised us.

If you are using the PT Presets, the First Keyswitch delay is already set to the right amount (that manages the delay of the first note, so you don´t have to worry about that). You can also move the whole track (or, as you put it, the whole group of repeated notes) in DP, until the timing is right.

    Hope this helps.

  • Thanks for your quick response, Paul!
So, please correct me if I´m wrong. I just want to make sure I´m doing it right. I am using the PT presets. So all I have to do is to manually move ONLY the whole group of repeated notes by the same ammount as whatever the First Key Switch Delay in the PT is set to?
If it is set to 30 miliseconds, then I´d move those repeated notes by 30 miliseconds? To the right (earlier) or to the left (later)?
So I´d have to do this for every "group" of repeated notes, as they happen?
I will check in the Unicornation forum if someone there knows how to delay the track. It would be hard to believe that Digital Performer can´t do that!!!
I´m sure we have on THIS forum a DP guru who could help me with this.
    Anybody?
    Thanks a lot, my friends.

    Best regards,
    Fernando

  • Hi Guys,

In the Mixer window of DP, you can put a 'Time Shift' insert on the relevant midi track. This brings up a little window where you can enter the time advancement (or delay). The little button to the right of the entry field allows you to select whether you want to enter a value in beats/ticks, seconds & 1/100s, frames, or samples. (The default is beats/ticks, which you probably don't want as perhaps the tempo changes.) You can't do milliseconds directly, but of course you can convert to 1/100s or samples. Be sure to press return after you enter a value (rather than just clicking away from the window) - otherwise I think it ignores what you entered.

I must admit I haven't used this much myself, but I think this is the feature you are looking for.

By the way I use DP4.6, but AFAIK this is not a particularly new feature.

    All the best,
    Angus

  • Thank you for the tip, Angus. So you mean the Time Shift MIDI plug in, eh?
I will give it a try.
So then, I just set the plug in to as many miliseconds as the VSL PT is set to for that track in repetition mode, right? This should do the trick.

    Thank you for your help.

    Fernando

  • Yes. But it appears that you can't enter milliseconds directly - so you either have to divide the Perf Tool number by 10 and enter 1/100 of seconds, or multiply the PT number by 44.1 (if you are working at a sample rate of 44100) and enter that as samples.
