I already posted this over at Vi-Control but have yet to receive any response from a VSL representative. Also, two of my mails to support just bounced back.
Just a heads-up:
My firewall registered multiple suspicious connection attempts (China Telecom / Shanghai) to MacOS Kernel (Ventura) after using Vienna Assistant.
For reference, my IP is in Austria. Like most of us, I have UPnP on my router enabled (for various reasons) and have repeatedly witnessed Vienna Assistant opening port 6881 (Bit Torrent) to the system in question, thus, making it prone to port scanners searching for weak spots in your network. Turning off UPnP on the router and rebooting MacOS removes port 6881 from port forwarding. When using the computer for a while with enabled UPnP, the port stays closed (even while using other downloaders such as Pulse or Musio). However, start a download on Vienna Assistant and port 6881 is immediately reopened.
I assume that Vienna Assistant uses the Torrent protocol for distributing downloads - nothing wrong about that. But using standard ports that are designated for torrenting is a little less ideal, perhaps. In any case, I'd suggest to delete the port forwarding entries opened up by Vienna Assistant after each use. At least, this is my take-away.
Can we expect any efforts on VSL's end to fix this in the future? Or any other suggestions? Would be much appreciated as UPnP is usually enabled by default on most routers.
