  • EQ starting points...Guides if you will

    Hello all,

I was looking for a"guide"if you will (for lack of a better term) or a manual (book) for some EQ starting points when it comes to EQ'ing your Orchestral sections within a mix...(Is there an "EQ for dummies"?) There might not be such a "guide" or source to give starting points for the different instruments in a mix situation but any help would be appreciated.

I guess that I am looking for a point to start from for each instrument/section when mixing an Orchestra. The books that I have found on the subject are more for Pop or Rock music styles.

  • Check out Bob Katz' "Mastering Audio" book. It comes with a chart listing orchestral instruments, their ranges, and the pitches measured in Hz. It also has a diagram in the book detailing how an EQ affects the sound from boosts and cuts. Very handy book for far more than just EQ tips.

  • ANother route is to use your ears and spend some time experimenting. I find that generally subtractive eq is necessary to sit some instruements back in the mix. VSL clarinet has a bit of a resonance in the mid range that benefits from some reduction to help it appear a little more distant.

Comparing your VSL work with recordings of similar style music will help a lot, and learning by your own hard work is often more revealing, informative and rewarding.
