  • Opus 1 sample error in Vl-14_stac-2

    Hello again,

    I found another harmony in the attack of another patch. This time its in Vl-14_stac-2 and happens when you play notes f#3,G3,G#3, and really bad on A3 & Bb3. These occur when you play the notes very soft (between 1-50ish) and I recommend starting on Bb3 and working your way down to hear them all.

    Is there anything I can do, as I need these notes at this dynamic, and unfortunately its a solo violin line so I cant hid it.

  • Hmm... You mean an upper minor sixth, at very low audio level, when playing A3/Bb3?

  • Yeah, though if you keep going down, you begin to hear what sounds almost like con legno but with pitch on G#3, G3, and F#3.

    Should we contact tech support about problems like these?

    I guess our reports in a public forum should be equally effective!

    I already pointed out two possible defects in Opus 1 programs (EXS24 version) here: http://community.vsl.co.at/viewtopic.php?t=5804 and here: http://community.vsl.co.at/viewtopic.php?t=6046

    I guess they will fix it all in a unique session.

    Any sign of life from Vienna?

  • That's how it sounds, especially in the pp layer in a large group (14 players) you will hear a little amount of harmonics and resonances of higher strings.

  • I suspected it, Herb, although I would expect a perfect fifth or an octave as these are, if I'm not wrong, the nearest harmonics to the fundamental tone.

    PS - What about the staccato missing sample?

  • You can hear harmonics of the higher strings also (D, A, and E strings). One of the 14 plaers is touching with a finger one of this strings and you get some harmonics. However, as I said that's a kind of natural "distortion" you get from 14 performers at a pp playing level.

    Hmm... not to polemicize, Herb, but if a player accidentally hits a string, thus generating a random harmonic, wouldn't it be worth to record again a cleaner sample?

  • At a pp level this a kind of noises are very often not detactable at the recordingstage.

    And of course it's a matter of taste how much human touch a sample should have.

    I agree, Herb, but samples suffer a disadvantage: the "human touch" repeats itself mechanically identical every time you strike "that" note.

    I guess all libraries (even the most expensive) have unexpected random harmonics, not robotically synchronized attacks and so on. Under some aspects, it's good. GPO Flute, for example, has at least one audible key click around C#4 (but I could be wrong about the exact pitch): each time you play that note, you hear the click.

    So, IMHO, samples, because of their static and ripetitive nature, should be as "neutral" as possible, leaving to the post-production phase the pleasure of making them live. An interesting alternative could be adding, as bonus content, "humanized" (i.e. "defective") samples, to be randomly inserted here and there according to the musician's taste.

    Don't misunderstand me: VSL is a terrific library, to me it's the best for the "pure" musician and I'm considering an upgrade to the Pro edition. It was only a... mmm... in Italy we would call it: "a goaty-wool question".
