  • lists of available articulations working with dorico expression maps

    Hello,

Are there somewhere, unfindable for me, lists or explications on which VSL articulations of the various (synchronized) instruments are available in Dorico (4.3) ? I hear, and notice in the player, that only few of the articulations available, and given in the Dorico articulation window work, and that many more are provided for in the Dorico expression map.

Is this a limitation of the VSL installer for Dorico, and do I have to make the other articulations available myself, or ?

    regards,

    Gerard

  • Hello Gerard!

There is no other such list than the expression maps themselves. You can look at them with Dorico under Library/Expression Maps. There you can see all the articulations.

Most articulations that are included in our libraries are included in the expression maps as well. Some articulations are hard to integrate in notation software though.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hello Andi,

Thanks for the reply. I am struggling to get many of the articulations given in the expression maps and in the Dorico window to work: For example legato in the VSL SYzd Solostrings violin 1 and viola specified by keyswitches A-1, D0, C1 in the expression map, and in the Synchron player 01a Violin basic VelXF sus (as in other presets) as D (1), C(2) (Steinberg / VSLnumbering matter).

Inserting legato in the Write window does not invoke legato however, invokes nothing.

I cannot find the cause nof this.

    regards,

    Gerard

  • Hi Gerard,

I use the SYzd Solostrings and have created my own Expression Maps for them in Dorico as I find it gives better control and I know what I've done. They all work OK as far as I can see. If I remember correctly, the VSL maps also are based on the basic patches rather than the full set (where quite a number could not easily be translated into notation as Andi has said).

It might be worthwhile if you post this problem also on the Dorico forum where perhaps more people would see it and try to help. If you post there for instance a brief sample project, I'll have a look and see if I can find a reason for your problems.

  • Hello Gerard!

Legato for SYNCHRON-ized Solo Strings works fine here. The different numbers are just a different labeling. You can change the displayed number in the Dorico expression maps, as well as in Synchron Player. So this is not the reason for your problem.

Here are two hints that might help you.
    - Legato can be triggered by a slur or the playing technique "legato".
    - Maybe you have another command earlier in the score that overrides legato. You can try adding an "ord." command before the legato command to reset the playing techniques.

If you can't sort it out, you can send your Dorico project to support@vsl.co.at and we will take a look at it.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • One problem which is sometimes encountered is that playing techniques are not always cancelled by new ones, although Dorico does have a feature of automatically setting up EM exclusions so this should be minimized. However, it's not entirely reliable and you need to be able to understand the difference between "attribute" and "direction" in playback techniques -- the former, which are often articulations like staccato or tenuto, only apply to the actual notes they are on and the latter continue until cancelled. You can only be sure if one technique will cancel another by checking the mutual exclusions in the map. And you need to remember that if you use a slur for instance together with another playing technique, then this combination must be specified in the map, otherwise things simply won't work.

As Andi says, it's a good idea to perform a reset "ord" when in difficulty.

  • Thanks for the responses !

I'll have to run more tests I presume, and fill in here and there.

(Now I am working on making dynamics work, it is not easy getting into the combination VSL and DORICO after having been away for almost 2 years),

    regards,

    Gerard
