  • [SOLVED] Balance has changed with MIR 3D and where are Legacy MIR Engine Projects?

    I have upgraded to MIR 3D but the balance between my orchestral instances has changed.  I have four instances in VEPro:  Strings, WW, Brass and Percussion.  When I load up a project that I am familiar with from before 3D, the balance has changed - The String instance is very quiet for example - I can't figure out what's happening.  Then, some of my instrument levels are just not sounding the same level as before, even though I've checked the 'natural volume' settings are the same.  Is there any solution?  I almost feel like returning to the old MIR which I had spent so much time tweaking - Is there a way to do that?  Can I remove the 3D versions and get back to the legacy MIR?

    I also noticed that the wet/dry settings are not being respected from when the project was saved pre 3D.  I really just want things to sound the same as before and then I can start looking into the new features.

    Also, under the file tab in the MIR 3D menu, there is:  Load legacy MIR engine project...  How do you save a legacy MIR engine project in the first place?  Would this be a better file to load to get the same settings as before the upgrade to 3D?

  • Okay, I have just read an earlier post and I think I understand what might be going on.  All my instruments in each instance are grouped together with a master fader - this gives me the ability to balance entire orchestral sections.  However, I guess with the 3D MIR being a separate entity, I am getting the ‘natural volume’ settings twice - one on top of the other.  This explains some of the volume anomalies I have been experiencing.  I will try in the morning to remove the groups, reset the faders to ‘0’ and see if that solves the balance issues.  I have a feeling it will because all the ‘natural volume’ settings are already in MIR 3D, and don’t also need to be applied to the VEPro faders.

    I would still like to point out that the wet/dry settings do not appear to be respected from my old project settings.

  • Hi Andy,

    - "MIR Engine Settings" contain(ed) all information about the empty Venue (Microphone choice, their Output Format Settings, RoomEQ banks, and all Global Output parameters in general). They didn't (couldn't) include any source-specific data and have therefore been replaced by MIR 3D's much more advanced Preset Management with Venue Presets and the encompassed "Roles" for specific sources. - You can still load existing Engine Projects from MIR 3D's File-dialog, but it won't help in your case.

    - Natural Volume is indeed a MIR-specific value and shouldn't be applied twice. Legacy MIR Pro shared its volume settings with VE Pro, but since MIR 3D is more of a conventional plug-in for VE Pro this connection doesn't exist any longer.

    - Dry/Wet ratio is influenced by several variables (not just the individual Icon-specific settings): Please check if the parameters that handle MIR's Distance-Dependent Scaling for the volume of the dry signal are set to the desired modes. In addition, please be aware that MIR 3D offers new options to control this ratio on a Venue-wide level by means of the so-called CLASSIC / SCORING / POP mode switches.

    - During the development of MIR 3D we put great emphasis on the perfect translation of existing MIR Pro projects. However, if you still think that you can't achieve the results you got from legacy MIR Pro you can always re-install MIR Pro. Just make sure that MIR 3D was un-installed before, and of course the legacy RoomPacks must be accessible. (They will happily co-exist with MIR 3D RoomPacks in the same folder, BTW.)

    Thank you so much for your reply.  I have removed the group settings from my instances and set all the faders to '0' - This seems to have done the trick.  Everything sounds the same as before MIR 3D, so I appreciate all the work that went into achieving that at your end.

    This kind of came up for me too and initially was under similar impression....  But it makes sense that if I have a project where natural volume was set in MirPro...then in the past it would have been adjusting the VePro mixer also...but now VePro Mixer needs to be unity gain...and the natural volume setting within MirPro..or whatever the level is set to...will be determining the level that should match what was heard previously..and I found that to be the case also...  Either that or I should set MirPro's volume to unity gain on every instrument and adjust the orchestra balance in the DAW mixer.

    Also, For some reason my Reverb time got set down to 1s instead of 2.2s, I don't know why...So once I bumped up the room reverb size to 2 seconds, and made sure around 50% wet...it sounded about the same  (only better 😉
