    I do not have a lot of spare money at my disposal to purchase a Brand New Computer/Server.  I have worked in IT for 20 + years so I know my way around Infrastructure.  However, I am rather new to VEP Pro in a non-stand alone means.  

    I cleaned up a rather old Dell Latitude Windows 10 (2nd generation i7 proc) 16GB of RAM with an older internal SATA drive and a 2TB external drive(non-SSD).   It runs VEP Pro 7 and all my VSL libraries are installed on this older laptop.  Obviously, that kind of HW will barely keep VEP Pro up & running.  Slow and lots of lag, but I excepted such but was hoping for the best. 

    I know exactly what I would go get to make it run Perfectly "if" I had the money.  Unfortunately, I do not.

    What have your experiences been if you have been in this situation?  I imagine I am not the only one who is/has experienced this?   Your thoughts?

    What is the close to as realistic experience to run VEP Pro 7 on some type of refurbished machine?  Specs?  Would it run on a some what recent i5 with 64GB of RAM better with SSD drives?  or do I have to go for the latest i7 Proc with the previously explained specs?

    VSL is my "go to" for my libraries, so I am almost dead in the water when it comes to composing and I am dying to write music.  

    Any experience, strength, or hope (along with advice) would be greatly appreciated.

    Avast there Bob!

    Is the older laptop the system you run your host on? Does it have Gigabit Ethernet? What sized ensemble do your write for?

    Hosting your samples on a SSD is a must. I'd start there...

    Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaargh !  I jus' knew you might say such !  Blimey !  SSD drives !

    Aye, I do agree... there be no movi'n parts inside that device... 

    Alas, that leaves high and dry upon barren shores !  for the computer hath no ability for them blasted things !  It is too old and haggard...

    Although, surprisingly, it does have a gigabit nic.  I did more research of the exact proc it has and it is rather old. VEP Pro is processor intensive.  Also with the 16GB of RAM at such slow speeds Almost anything at would be a hefty Upgrade in performance.  I continued my research with VEP Pro and have come to the conclusion the processor should be at least a 4 Core, 6 or 8 preferably (i5 or i7).  The bare minimum of 32GB of RAM (DDR3 or higher).  I went through one article/thread/forum after the other.  Along with your suggestion of SSD drive(s) only.
