  • MIR Pro 3D RoomPacks Venue Presets

    Hi,

    I am in the evaluation process for all RoomPacks, before I choose which packs to purchase.
    As a beginner, I like the auto positioning feature, so I can be sure to have an instrument placed in the right spot.

    I hope I'm not mistaken, but I don't see a "Vienna Standards" Preset for all venues.
    For example: If I switch to "Steinhofkirche" (or others) there isn't necessarily a preset for these venues.
    So by default some instruments are placed in "dead areas".

    Do you plan to add a "Vienna Standards" Preset for all venues ?

    thanks for your interest in MIR Pro 3D!

    The "Vienna Standards" are based on the tried-and-tested "MIRx" settings I created for more or less all Vienna Instruments, based on the idea of having "the whole orchestra" (of 450+ players ... 8-0) in a somewhat meaningful relation between each single instrument and all others. Creating these settings was a really, r-e-a-l-l-y laborious endeavour. It took me around six to eight weeks to finish the presets for a single (!) Venue.

    So while it might seem tempting to promise additional "Standards", I have to admit that this won't happen any time soon. First of all, VSL's legacy Vienna Instruments can't be regarded as the main focus of MIR 3D any longer, and it doesn't make much sense to create presets for 3rd-party sound sources I don't know anything about. Secondly: Not all MIR Venues lend themselves well for the meaningful positioning of 450 instruments. ;-D

    But the actual reason is much more pleasing than that: MIR 3D's new Preset Management allows for the creation of user-defined Venue Presets which might in turn work much like the original (but fixed) MIRx settings. Even if it's too tedious for you to create your own settings (which is a really straight-forward process once you grasp a few basics), I think it's only a matter of time before user-generated Venue Presets will be shared and exchanged between fellow users. :-)

    Ok, I definitely underestimated how much effort it would take to perfectly coordinate different instruments for all venues. Especially when you consider that there are also very small places (like a church) where it's going to be hard to squeeze 450+ players in. ðŸ˜‰

    Can you (roughly) tell me what those positioning basics are or name me a good source (book, web) ?

    There are quite a few sources that cover typical orchestral seatings, like this one. But actually, it's really just a matter of habits, taste and the needs of an arrangement's inner logic, in most cases. Like:

    - Keep the basses in the center (although hard-core fans of classical music will contradict! 😉 ...)

    - Make sure that there's a global balance between left an right in each frequency range (which doesn't mean that it's great to have strong dynamics within an arrangement)

    - Don't forget that mixing is all about playing with momentary contrasts: An element will sound very loud if another one was very quiet. Same is true for close/far away, bright/dark, harsh/mellow ....

    .... all of this is very simple to achieve, but defies persistently the idea of having presets that fit all needs. 8-/ Makes much more sense to move a few MIR Icons around the stage of a MIR Venue and hear how this impacts a particular arrangement. After all, that's why MIR was invented in the first place! 😉
