  • searching on the forum: no results

    Hello,

Maybe I am doing something wrong, but every time I do a 'search' on the forum the process is very slow, and I end up with a blank page.

    Greetings,

    Gerard Beljon

  • after upgrading to the latest version of the forum software (PHPbb2) and PHP version5 (because of security issues with the earlier versions) we could fix several things like email notification.
what we couldn't fix so far is the strange search algorithm, which obviously was not intended to handle forums with more than 40.000 posts - runs into a timeout and presents no result. i have noticed this eg. searching for the term *instruments* ... (for those among you who are familiar with SQL: the code uses too many joins)
currently a workaround would be to restict your search on a certain forum or vary the word you are searching and assumably will not return too many search results.
unfortunately there are no options like indexing left to enhance the performance and we will have to change the programming of the search algo

  • Hello,

Even restricting my search to only one forum does not work.
I tried to find something about the solo strings, so typed this (also tried it with solo AND strings, or only the word solo). All searches result in the blank page. I don't want to complain, but I think effectively the search option does not work anymore

    greetings,

  • sorry gerard ... running the query directly against the database gives me a result of 603 posts for the term *solo strings* - obviously too much to be returned.
selecting *vienna symphonic library* as forum and *VIENNA SYMPHONIC LIBRARY* as category (might not be visible for you) and choose the option *search for all terms* reduces the results to 326, which can be displayed.

well, i don't want to start a discussion about programming here, but the search function from phpBB is simply c**p ... of course this turned up since we had a certain number of posts here and as i mentioned before: we're aware of it and work on a better solution

  • Hello Christian,

That works! 'Search for all terms' is not the default, that's why it did not work. Thank you!

    Greetings,
