  • Logic 10.7.4 is crash-happy; VEP AU3 is innocent!

While testing a redesign of my Situater orchestral intonation subsystem in the Environment, Logic 10.7.4 has been crashing about every 10 minutes or so while running a sequencer loop about a minute long.

My current Logic-Situater configuration uses a large-ish VEP AU3 template, and I was wondering if that's the problem. First I tried running my Logic-Situater test project without the VEP Server loaded (local host). Still crashes. Next I disabled all the VEP AU3 plugins in Logic. Still crashes. Then I deleted all the VEP plugins in the Logic project (which also removed many dozens of associated Aux extension tracks). Still crashes. Finally I reverted to an old Situater build that I've had running without problems in Logic 10.4.8. Still crashes.

So VEP AU3 (iLok) does indeed appear to be innocent in this case.

I suspect that Logic's new and extremely weird Note Off behaviour may be a factor in this crash-happiness. I'm not getting any hanging notes or notes being cut off unexpectedly; nothing like that. But in my investigations I've seen new Logic's Note Off repetitions gradually increasing in number to a disturbing degree. Perhaps that weird build-up just gets out of hand eventually. But I don't know.

Several recent reviews of Logic in the App Store speak of dire misbehaviour by the app. As well as crashes I've also seen several new and disturbing functional issues. Has Apple reached the terminal stage of so-called "code rot" in Logic? Or is the current small team of Logic devs simply out of their depth with Emagic's old masterpiece? Who knows?

Only thing I can suggest for Logic users is to think about other DAWs.

Meanwhile, development of my Situater project will continue with Logic 10.4.8, but I won't even think about releasing it publicly unless and until there's a current Logic version that can behave itself properly in projects other than Noddy Goes To Toytown stuff.
