  • Now The '007' theme

Well, don't ask me how it happened .. there I was making some alterations of my Bond theme piece, (My latest and probably last version is now up on my site), and I found myself wondering ... "hmmm, what about the 007 theme". And before I know it I'm punching out the string rhythm and recording.

Again purely done for kicks ... not intended in any way as 'better' version ... just'my' version. Have a looksee. Again the brass didn't quite cut it .. I need 'fff' instruments. But it's fun .. and a very rudimentary mix. (This took about 3 hours to write and finish).

HEHE, I'm an idiot .. forgot to post the link... not that anyone seemed to ask [:(]

  • Hetoreyn,

I've just had a listen to the bond music (both of them), and it sounds like you had a lot of fun doing this.
There's already comments about the drums and not enough swing in the middle and i agree with this. But i note you did it for the enjoyment , so i won't give you a bar by bar critique. I rather enjoyed them both for the difference to the 'normal' versions, and the only thing i'll add is just a bit too much reverb.
I've also listened to the other stuff under the elven moons themes, and enjoyed that too. What i will say is, so much music these days particularly for film tends to be slow and dreamy, and i wonder if a 'demon elf' theme would provide a contrast to the others.
I'm going to head back to your site later and have another listen, when i'm through resurrecting the laptop.

    Well done.

    Regards,

    Alex.

Yeah, they have been fun to do. I would never consider doing a 'Bond' project cos I don't think I could do the songs the justice they deserve .. they're fun to play and I've learned alot about using the VSL in doing this. I tried my best to put the 'swing' in there .. what can I say I just don't know how to do it ;D As for the reverb .. I can't help it I love it too much. I tried it without so much I just didn't like it ;D

As for my Elven Moods stuff, thanks for commenting. The current pieces are romantic, but the Moonsinger Heroes piece is a very stirring battle and fanfare piece.. though there's only a short snippet available for download at present. My first album did have many depressed mood pieces aswell as romanitc ones and I'm aware of the album becoming to 'flighty' ... hehe Don''t worry I intend to write just as many darker pieces .. and I've already been rallied to write some more battle pieces.

    Well thanks for the comments.

  • Hetoreyn,

i've been totally in the mood for some John Barry recently having not listened to him for ages. I like your version, and as a fledgling VSL-er it's great to hear these works posted here to get an idea of what can be done.

I have to say there is something quite ballsy/rude about most of the Bond era recordings I have heard (sorry I don't have details to hand of EXACTLY which recordings I'm refering to as none of them are mine) but it just seems to be a combination of Barry's style and part of the recording process of the time - that almost slightly distorted-compresed signal onto old 1/2" tape sound and, of course, pressed onto vinyl ... shrill horns, searing strings, real *bite* ... yet warm and silky too....

Anyway, i'm not suggesting VSL should sound that way... (perhaps they could release an 'old fashined recording style' edition one day!)

As a friend of mine once said, refering mainly to the Connery/Moore era films, "Bond movies are a perfect accompaniment to Barry's music"

    That's so true!

P.S. i have emailed you about the drums! [:D]

Well you'll probably find a plugin in logic .. or whatever you use to give that sort of effect. I know what you mean, and as I've repeatedly said it's a shame that my first edition brass just doesn't seem to have the really harsh tones that were used in the bond songs. I have to admit to being a fan of smooth, airey, wide and very ambient orchestral works. That's what I try to do with my works.

So it's only inevitable that that kind of orchestration will bleed over into everything i do .. even bond themes... Heh maybe I'll try the romantic theme from 'Man with the golden gun", or even 'Moonraker' next ;D

Anyways, always nice to meet another Barry fan.
