  • Help me understand VEP7 with DP and the MAS plugin

I'm using the latest versions of both VEP and Digital Performer on a Mac MINI OS 11.6.5. When I try to use the MAS plugin to connect to the server, I get horrible latency and data drops. I can press a key on my MIDI keyboard several times before it actually triggers a note and then it's delayed by about a half second. It also frequently misses the note-off messages so I get a lot of stuck notes. Connecting with either the AU or VST plugin works fine. Am I doing something wrong? I thought the MAS plugin would work even better within the DP environment.

Hmm, I've been using DP w VEP7 MAS for years and it's always been quite stable and responsive. though I haven't updated to the ilok version of VEP yet.  Are you using the brand new ilok VEP7 by?  (anything post 7.0.1120)?  Wondering if maybe you've uncovered more buggy behavior with this ilok transition.

  • Yes, I'm using the iLok version 7.1.1298. I also took the time to do total clean reinstalls of both DP and VEP on the chance there was some sort if hidden issue between the two. Unfortunately, that didn't make any difference. See my other post in this same forum about VEP and DP causing the computer to go to sleep even while I'm using it. At this point, color me unimpressed. And just to be clear, it's on an Intel machine, not an M1.

  • I'd suggest checking the buffer size in DP11. See p. 247 in the manual. I usually have mine set to 512 or 256. But you can experiment with higher values to see if that solves the latency problems you are experiencing.

From the manual: "You also have a third option: turn off your audio hardware’s “hardware-based” monitoring andlower the Buffer Size setting. The default settings is 1024 samples. Try lowering it to 512, 256 or even 128 samples. This gives you the best of both worlds: very low monitoring latency (3-6 ms) with effects processing. The trade-off in this scenario is that the lower buffer settings put more strain on your computer."

  • Thanks for the suggestion, but it's not the buffer. Changing the buffer size makes no difference in this scenario. We're talking not just massive latency, but huge numbers of data dropouts. I can press a MIDI key 4 or 5 times and only get one or two notes to actually sound. Then one of them invariably has the note-off message dropped, so I end up with a stuck note. Besides, the buffer setting works exactly as you would expect when I use the AU or VST version of the VEP plugin. It's just the MAS that seems to be totally hosed for me.

  • The iLok versions of the new libraries, Synchron Player and VEP plugins do not currently support MAS in Digital Performer. [Edit: Apparently fixed in the LATEST version.] In fact, most Mac folks can only seemingly get it to work at all by doing a manual download and install and not using Vienna Assistant to perform the installations. I've not heard reports of whether the Windows versions will work this way, and I am afraid to try again till I hear something concrete, as using Vienna Assistant hosed all my projects leaving them to report "MAS Plugin not found" for all my tracks using them. (A TON OF TRACKS!!!)

Your only recourse is likely to start over again using your eLicenser versions of the libraries and plugins. Reverting for me fixed everything.

If using the eLicenser version, Do NOT try to install the Futanaro Flute freebie, as it only installs via the Vienna Assistant and that installation will break your Synchron Player.

  • Interesting. I just recently purchased VEP7, so the only version I have is the new iLok version. I did use the Vienna Assistant to do the VEP installation.

The MAS plugins for VEP show in the DP Plug-ins window in DP Preferences. There are two of them (Vienna Ensemble Pro and Vienna Ensemble Pro Audio Input). However when you try to actually add a plugin to a project, only the first one (Vienna Ensemble Pro) shows as an option. Because of all the issues I've had with the MAS version, I have disabled both plugs in DP.

I also have both Synchron Player and Synchron Harp and neither of those show as an MAS plugin, just AU and VST.

  • I'm hearing similar identical reports from fellow DP/MAS/VEP using friends.  I think its safe to say that ilok VEP MAS still doesn't work correctly yet.  Hopefully VSL is reading this and working on a fix! (fingers crossed).

  • There is a "Latest" version that is supposed to repair many of the remaining issues.

Most importantly for me is that the MAS plugins now are installed for Digital Performer.

  • Hi everybody,

We're on it, thanks for your patience!

  • I’m having EXACTLY the same problem, massive delays and data dropouts. This is VEPro 7.1.1298 and DP 11.04. I installed VEPro with Vienna Assistant, is there a newer version of the MAS plugin that VA is not installing? If so, can I get it from my download section on the website?

    Hi Paul,

Really appreciate that you guys are on this.  I gotta say, I can't help but feel like so much of these headaches could be avoided if VSL had a few DP users on the beta testing team.  I'm a beta tester for MOTU/DP itself and there are so many bugs that our beta testing team help MOTU squash before each release.  Makes such a world of difference.  I really wish VSL would consider adding me to the VEP beta testers community.  If not me then other DP/VEP power users please.

    Thanks for the consideration.

  • I rolled back VEPro to the previous version and all is well. Caveat- you can't do it with Vienna Assistant, it won't install the MAS plugin. Use the old-school standalone installer.

  • Unfortunately, I only have the iLok version and can't access the older downloads.

  • Email VSL tech support, they'll send you a link. Hopefully they'll have a new version that fixes this in a few days.

  • I had the exactly the same problem, and changing to other earlier builds of iLok did NOT help me, FWIW.

I finally decided to switch all my templates to the AU VEP client in DP, which works fine.  It's kind of a pain, but doable if you only use 16 channels at a time per VEP Instance, which I mostly do.  I figure the AU client is much more likely to be solid on Macs, since it's intended to work on multiple types of DAWs, whereas the MAS client is only for DP.

Glad to see I wasn't the only one to hit this bug, though.

I manually uninstalled the current version of VEP using the uninstaller in the VEP folder and then downloaded and installed the .1263 version, also for iLok, using the link below, not Vienna Assistant. It all works wonderfully, now!

I'm having a version of this problem as well - the 7.1.1298 VEP the MAS plugin gives glitches and pops ONLY during live keyboard input.

Sounds as if multiple MIDI events are getting sent, and are cutting each other off.

Playback from MIDI tracks is OK.

AU version of the VEP plugin is also OK.

Looking forward to the rev! I can work around by falling back to 7.0.xxx or otherwise avoiding the MAS plug for now.

Thanks, Dave. I hadn't seen that there was a new version until I saw your post. I have installed the new version and MAS seems to be working just fine now with DP. Thanks for the post!
