  • In Sibelius, Vienna Harp 2 plays bisb. by default, not nat.

Hello - am using Sibelius Ultimate 2021.2, Vienna Ensemble Pro 7 and Vienna Harps (in an orchestral score). I am using the Sibelius | Harps _Harp2_std preset and the VE Harps | Harp 2 soundset.

With no articulation or technique specified in the score, the harp always plays bisb. It should play nat. by default. Writing in 'nat.' or 'natural' or 'normal' doesn't make any difference. Things like harmonics and mute are working fine. Of course, I can insert a CC1 message in Sib (for example, ~C01,65) to force the harp to play nat., and this does work. But why is this necessary?

(By the way, this has been the case for years, all through from Sib 7 and VEP 5, but I finally got round to asking the question!)

    Thank you!

  • Hello lewisap!

I cannot reproduce your problem. The patch "01 HA2_normal" gets triggered by default here.
Could it be that you have loaded the wrong VI preset? For the usage with the Sibelius sound set "VE Strings", the VI presets under Sibelius/Strings 3.8/Harps are required. Further possible reasons for your problem can be found in the Troubleshooting section of our Sibelius Integration tutorial.

  • Hi Andi

Thanks for such a swift reply! I see, the problem is that I am not using VE Strings, but VE Harps. I have changed to VE Strings, and it has fixed things.

BUT, this does raise the question of the purpose of the VE Harps soundset. What is it for? In VE Harps, one has Harp 1 and 2, but in VE Strings just 'Harp', so I assumed I would need this to use the Harp 2 sounds. What sounds does VE Harps work with?

  • Hi lewisap!

"VE Harps" is a very old sound set that we don't provide since more than 10 years. I'm surprised that there's someone out there that still has it. You can delete it. It has been replaced by "VE Strings" since then.

    Andi

  • Oops, thank you Andi. I guess I should have asked this question 10 years ago!
