  • Final Mastering of Piano Tracks

I have been been doing some recording using the Steinway D274 and the Bosendorfer Imperial. When I play back my tracks on various devices (including in the car and other stereo systems) they can sound a little thin and nasal compared to what I hear through my headphones when recording. Does anyone do any kind of mastering on their recordings.? The pianos sound fantastic when I record and listen on my headphones so I'm wondering if anyone uses - or can recommend a mastering plugin....

  • Well, in my experience the Imperial does not need a lot of help to be very present and large.
This side of 'mastering', which is a big subject, you need to mix for the target medium and do some comparison and judging back and forth. IE: 'mastering' is not the real answer to a variance in speaker response. So none of us can know if it's your headphones or your car that's further from what you really have in the track. Car seems more problematic in itself, of course, because speaker placement and absorption, not to mention numerous other aspects.

  • Thank you - I appreciate your reply. Actually I have been doing some further tweaking and am more satisfied with the result I  am able to achieve.  Like you pointed out, there are probably a lot of variables with the different devices and hardware that come into the equation.
