  • Dorico 3.5 VST Audio Engine & VEPRO Freeze Causing High CPU/Temp AMD Ryzen

    Hi,
VEPRO 7 is randomly hanging (one of the instances out of two) whilst working with Dorico causing my computer's CPU/Temperature to spike up. The CPU isn't a big concern as it just idles at whatever it got stuck at so for example ~12%. However, it’s the tempature that is the problem since it idles over ~80c. I have a brand new 5800x Ryzen cpu. This problem was not occurring on my previous computer (almost 2 months ago) Intel skylake cpu. I'm not sure if the cpu has anything to do with it but just trying to give all the information I can.
I've already been discussing this problem on the Dorico discourse forums (link here) and they've informed me to reach out to VSL forums as well. It seems VEPRO 7 is causing Dorico's VST Audio engine to hang and not shutdown properly which invokes the CPU/Temperature to spike up until I force quit VEPRO 7, Dorico, & VST Audio engine.
I can't get this problem to occur on command. This randomly happens when leaving Dorico on running with VEPRO that suddenly VEPRO will freeze and this problem will start. I only noticed the problem occurring because my fans would start ramping up to loud audible levels.
I've provided with the link below 3 stages of mini-dumps created which the Dorico staff has asked me to provide there as well to help get to the bottom of this. I took mini-dumps of all 3 troublemakers, Dorico, Dorico's VSTAudioEngine, & Vepro 7.
    01. Before the Freeze
    02. During the Freeze
03a. After the Freeze (This is when I told Dorico to shut down using menu > exit, Dorico closes but since hanging everything remained in the task manager)
03b. Force Quit Dorico (I force quit Dorico alone which should invoke a quit of the VSTAudio engine but it does not according to Dorico team, since the mini-dump I provided before stated its hanging because VEPRO 7 is hanging).

Hopefully together we can resolve whatever is happening.
    P.S.
    Vepro 7 v7.0.1056

  • Hello Dillon!

Unfortunately it's not possible to see what is hanging there in the dump file that you have provided. Most likely one of the hosted plugins (most likely a Kontakt script) isn’t returning from it’s process() call. If you could narrow it down to a specific instance/plugin, and make a dump with that alone - we could perhaps look further.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi,

Thank you for getting back to me. I'm all for investigating further to see who is the problem-child of the plugins (kontakt & others) in the instance.

My question is, how do I do a mini-dump of that plugin alone? Unless you are referring that I load maybe an instance of each plugin separately and see which one hangs?

    Cheers,
    Dillon

  • Hello Dillon!

I don't think that it's possible to make a mini-dump of only the plugins. I ment a mini-dump of VE Pro with only the plugin included that causes the freeze. I would start with Kontakt.

    Best regards,
    Andi
