  • Loading behavior of Ensemble Pro

I consider buying Vienna Ensemble Pro and use it from Cubase Pro.

Say I have a template with Instruments i1 and i2. Say I have a project p1 that only uses i1 (track for i2 is disabled), and project p2 only uses i2 (track for i1 is disabled).

    a) When I load p1, will Ensemble also load i2 into RAM?

    b) When I switch to p2, will Ensemble unload p1 from RAM?

  • Hi Marco,

You can load and unload tracks via automation.

Some users create their presets with two small MIDI-event at the beginning of each track in the DAW, one enalbing and the other disabling the track in VEP via automation. So depending on if you want to enable or disable the track, you disable one of the events and enable the other one.
When switching to such a project you simply play back the bar with this data and wait a moment until the instruments are loaded.

  • Is this the only way the DAW has to tell Ensemble that a track is needed? If so, users who do not use this automation would then have to enable all tracks in Ensemble for all projects, correct?

  • Hi Marco,

That's indeed the only way to enable/disable a track.

    Ben,

My problem is not directly related to Marco's one, but it is a problem that wastes my time. In short words, VEP7 hangs on loading instances. In detail the situation is like that:

Instance 1 - 12 Kontakt 6s,  each containing one set of Berlin Woodwinds Revive articulations for a given instrument (i.e all piccolo articulations sit in one Kontakt, all flute in the next etc). Each Kontakt uses its own port. Articulations within a Kontakt are switched by changing a channel. No KS used.

Instance 2 - 3 Play instances containing 4 woodwind instruments each. Each Play uses its own port. Articulations within Play are switched both by changing channels and using KS

Instance 3 - 9 instances of BBC SO Core player, each containing a single multi-articulation instrument. Articulations within an instrument controlled by KS.

VEP is installed on 2020 MacPro with Catalina OS, 96GB of RAM and 16 cores.

The hanging happens always when loading the instance with 12 Kontakts (BWW) directly precedes loading instance with 3 Plays (EWQL). Any other config seems to load correctly. Also, when loading instances they first appear with their proper titles then when loading ends titles turn into "untitled". I must be doing something wrong here.

Any help will be most appreciated.
