  • A quick big-up for BIG ZODIAC BRASS

Bought Zodiac last night and to say I'm very pleased with it is a ridiculous understatement. If you've ever looked across somewhat enviously at certain other sample libraries that have great big butch, burly brass sections, then I urge you to buy Zodiac, and quick - while it's still at the excellent introductory price.

Blimey O'Reilly !!! Zodiac's fff layers for trombones and for horns have me fired up and inspired like no other library ever has. With either horns, trombones or both together, I can play a closed, complete 13th chord, major or minor - using proper Orchestral Intonation of course - and the result is truly COLOSSAL, yet clean, clear and steady. 7-part divisi a12 for horns and a9 for trombones, anyone? This works wonderfully well for either section alone (84 horns or 63 trombones) or both sections in unison (147 big bold brass in-your-face instruments!!). And of course they also behave themselves with impeccable good manners at the lower dynamic levels.

I had to chuckle at Paul's choice of words in the intro video - "... ready to pimp your arrangements ...". Dear Paul, as we and especially Vienna move into 2021, a year I regard as the coming of age of the 21st century, I really don't believe the newly invigorated VSL need worry about "pimping" anything; I think more and more users of orchestral libraries are coming to realize you're hunting right up there with the leading pack these days, indeed ahead in several respects. Most especially, since the demise of the Todd AO scoring stage, Synchron Stage is in my book pretty much head and shoulders above the alternatives. I'll be using Zodiac brass not to pimp up anything else but as proud principal participants in my arrangements.

"Cinematic" anything is currently big and still getting bigger in digital music production. I don't know what that might be saying in general about western cultures today or tomorrow, but I for one am really enjoying the ride right now. The meek probably will inherit the earth eventually, but it seems to me the world is neither interested in nor ready for that quite yet. :D
