Legato vs sustain, the latter the better.

Hi All. Back to orchestral music after long time, I'm at my first attempt to do extensive articulation programming in DAW (I usually work with notation sw + sheet cheating). Let me say, I'm having lot of fun, first. Solo woodwinds phrasing is amusing. Yet I noticed that in some cases, using sustains gives me better results than actual legato patches. Does it depends from the specific interval between notes? Being VSL such a well engineered library, I will not be surprised of such a high attention paid to detailed rendition of instrumental practice. Let me add that I rely on Good Ole VI SE. Best
