    what is being SAVED on MIR PRO?

    I was pretty surprised when I found out that my SAVEed MIR project was NOT saving the positions of my instruments when I tried to revert them due to different room s and repositioning.

    Is there any way to UNDO is other than saving my Cubase project for it?


  • MIR Pro is "just" a plug-in, so all settings are saved by the host and its preset management system.

    When you save the so-called "MIR Engine Projects" by means of MIR's "File > Save"-dialogue (identified by their "*.mirep" filename extension), you are saving all the Venue-specific data, like the used Main and Secondary Microphone positions and setups, RoomEQ bank settings, Reverberation Time etc. - basically all data controlled by the "OUTPUT" section of the control strip on the right, plus the underlying Venue selection. But the MIR-Engine itself has no way to remember individual Icons on a stage, as they are controlled by the host.

    To avoid misunderstandings:  A MIR Engine Project is meant for the exchange of data between projects, or for the assembly of custom-designed "empty" halls, readily set up for (virtual) recordings. You don't _have_ to use this dialogue, as all project-specific data is saved by the plug-in host (i.e. your DAW or VE Pro) anyway. 

    As long as you didn't close the Cubase project in the meantime, you can always use MIR Pro's own "Undo"-feature to revert to previous settings. Alternatively it's very likely that Cubase has older auto-saved versions of your session in case you didn't save incrementally yourself.

    I really wished that one could create and save one's own MIRx settings, especially individual positionings and dry/wet ratios. Maybe a nice addition for a future update of MIR Pro. ðŸ˜‰

    By the way, is there a way to lock instruments? Very often I move instruments or change the wet/dry ratios unintentionally.

    Great idea! I'll put it on the list of feature suggestions. As a temporary workaround you could "H"ide Icons on a crowded stage.

  • I never encountered this because I used MIR in standalone Vienna Ensemble. When you save that, everything is remembered and also you can switch halls and the closest possible substitute placement appears sometimes smaller on the stage or too big depending on the hall or venue size but with all the other settings including dry/wet etc the same So this problem doesn't occur at all with saved Vienna Ensemble project files.

    The problem the original poster ran into wasn't that the plug-in version doesn't recall the settings, but that he erroneously expected the MIR Engine Project to contain instrument-specific data. You're able to switch Venues with a mouse click in MIR Pro's plug-in version just as you would do it in VE Pro.

    ... it might be worth pointing out again that these Engine Settings are a great way to build some kind of preset collections of "empty halls", much like I did in case of the "Venue Presets" (available from the Tutorials/Templates-section of MyVSL).

  • Why not simply have the plug-in used Vienna Ensemble, and MIR within that?  Then the instrument settings and everything would be saved. But I must not be understanding the problem...

    The solution is quite simple, I assume: Some MIR users prefer setups directly in their DAW, especially when working with audio files. 😊

  • Right. I have an unusual, even strange setup anyway. And use only standalone VE on an Indentured Servant computer. Or whatever the correct term is nowadays.

    this is of course suboptimal. I use MIR PRO directly in my DAW and can't just resize all players in one go when I switch venues. Also, I understand that this is due to my setup that I can't really save the setting to recall in ONE instance - which would be a feature wish :-)

    I'm not sure that I understand correctly - why wouldn't you be able to switch Venues on the fly ...? 8-/ ...

    ... or are you addressing the old question why it's not possible to fit the setup of a 20 x 30 meters hall on a (say) 3 x 4 meters stage without re-adjusting instrument position? To make this work properly it means to have MIR "knowing" in advance about the actual functions of individual players - which is what we tried to achieve by introducing MIRx and the respective "MIRx Mode" in MIR Pro: When switching between MIRx presets all instruments will indeed "magically" find their proper position. But to make this happen it needed quite some manual preparation work in advance (in that case already delivered by Yours Truly 😉 ...).

  • yes I can switch the venues of course but when I like to revert to the old venue I have to setup instrument positions all over again or reload my Cubase project.

    I do not use MIRX - maybe I misunderstood the concept of MIRX in the first place - I thought it can only be used with VSL libraries which I do not use.
