  • Issue with Synchronized SE Volume 3 Note Repeats

I've been demoing the synchronized special editions and found a major issue with Volume 3, Appassionata and Muted Strings. When you have the same note repeated within a short span, the repeated note has a large jump in volume. For instance with the Appassionata Strings full orchestra multi con, if you have 2 sixteenth notes, a sixteenth apart at the same velocity, the second note has a large jump in volume.

This can happen with direct note repeats or you have a lyrical line where you come back to a note within an eight note or less. I found this in every preset and patch in Volume 3. It's a little more subtle in the solo sordino presets. It appears the volume envelope is not resetting between notes fast enough if they are close together. This also affects the Appassionata bonus content in Volume 2. I checked the Chamber and Orchestral Strings, and they do not have this issue and behave as expected.

With the current sale ending at the end of August, I was considering the bundle, but this is a showstopper for me. I don't see this limitation with any other libraries I own. I hope to get an answer before the sale if over. Thanks in advance!

PS. I've attached a Cubase project file as an example.

  • Hi,

You might want to check your inbox on VI-Control as I've already answered your question.
In short: It's not an issue, the used articulations are not made for fast phrases and repetitions. There are other articulations that work better in such a context.

  • Just saw your response. This is not an issue with how to use the articulations. I am very familiar with overlapping notes for legato transitions where these are available. This is a real issue with Volume 3 that the volume envelope is not resetting properly between notes. This does not happen with the other volumes or any of my non-VSL libraries from the other big names, even ones with long attacks.

If the bottom line is that the VSL team does not see an issue here, then I am ok with that and will just have to pass on these. I am disappointed that no one to a look at my files as this is easily reproducible and obvious. I do like the player design, and overall quality and balance of the libraries. This is a real disappointment for me.

  • Of course I have looked into your file. And I've talked with my colleagues about this. As said, there are other articulations better suited for fast playing. Especially the first note has a longer fade in until the final volume is reached.

  • I spent more time looking at the suggestions that you made. Using the legatos either with overlapping notes or cc64 does indeed allow lyrical lines that have the same note repeated in close proximity without a jump in volume or other artifacts.

However, when I introduce a break and restart a new legato phase on the same note I ended the last phrase with within close proximity, usually an eight note or less, I can get a large jump in volume again or a sharp attack. I was using the Cellos 12 of Appassionata Strings in this example. Other sections do sometimes give similar artifacts using the legato articulation. The Orchestral or Chamber Strings don't exhibit this behavior.

I really want to like the Appassionata Strings, but will have to pass as it's too time consuming to try and work around these occurrences. I hope in the future something changes here. I will then definitely jump on board.
