I've a hankering for a small string ensemble preferably with solo strings which is able to do what I guess would normally be called "modern" and what I might call "scratchy, dry, sparse". I'd like it to go well with electric/guitar music I'd use it on its own for small - scale music with an indie rock type feel. I'm going for an elderly Radiohead vibe. Perhaps even more importantly, I also fancy myself as a Philip Glass quartet - type and I’d definitely want it to do that.
VSL Dimension I was suggested. Previoulsy I hadn't really looked as it was too expensive but I now notice the SE 5 version is much less and might well be a good solution for me.
I have some questions”
- Do you feel the Dimensions would meet my needs?
- I know I can switch off the room treatment for a dry sound. Does this work well?
- If I went for the SE 5 version , would I miss much from the standard version for my needs?
- I just saw the VI standard version is not much more expensive than the SE Synchron. I believe it’s very dry and if I wanted to mix it with my other library is it difficult? (I don't know enough to do anything other than turn up reverb).
- Which version would you recommend if any of the above for my needs? I can’t afford the full Dimension Synchron-ized So if the Dimension strings would suit my purposes shoaled I go for the full VI or SE Synchron-ized SE5?
I'm putting this out on the forum as I know opinions vary and I'd welcome as many suggestions as possible.
Thanks for your help
William
