  • Playback problems

Hello, I am wondering what I can do to try and avoid the problem of not all samples streaming correctly with cut-offs. Sometimes the piece I'm working on plays through without problems but more often than not it does not. I use Vienna Ensemble (not Pro) and Sibelius and have the Symphonic Cube. The samples are stored on an external disc (fast enough according to the manual) streaming via USB3. I also route the sound output via a digital mixer.

I have large orchestral score and it is certainly testing my system (Macbook Pro, 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3). There is enough RAM (16Gb) however when everything is loaded, with 2Gb still free according to Activity Monitor. I looked in the Optimising Playback manual and saw the section about velocity X-Fade which may be the solution but changing dynamics is such a feature of the score that turning this off for various instruments is not possible though maybe a midi command in certain places if I can work that out might be a solution but a pain.

Are there any other considerations I might try? I have wondered about the Optimize function in each individual instrument (currently off) but don't know what this does or if it will help, or similarly the Velocity XF instrument setting that defaults to Global rather than 'on' (or 'off').

It may be that my system isn't quite up to it but any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi Northfield,

We are currently investigating this issue.

  • Thanks that might be linked to the issues I am having though that all seems to be about Synchron player which I don't use - I use Vienna Ensemble. I did find however that fiddling with the threads option did offer temporary relief but the problem soon returns.

  • Hello Northfield!

A possible reason for your performance problem might be your hard disk. Streaming a large orchestral score from one hard disk with VelocityXF turned on generates a lot of voices simultaneously. I recommend using an SSD.

  • I think you might be right Andi. SSD drives not cheap though! Trouble is you can't really test it without buying one and transferring everything. The disc I have is 7200rpm.

I only have USB3 on my computer so am limited to the speed that can provide. If I buy a big enough external SSD drive do you think this would be fast enough? 440-540Mb/s seems an average speed of such a disc with USB3 (compared to 150Mb/s for what I have at present).

  • Hello Northfield!

An SSD connected via USB3 should be fast enough for most projects - even big ones. Furthermore the loading speed will be quicker and you can reduce the amount of data that gets loaded to RAM. So I can only recommend SSDs to everyone that works with our libraries.

    Best regards,
    Andi
