  • Can't get VSL to play samples tight, Timing is terrible

I have problems getting the VSL to play tight. Here's the setup: VSL First Ed., Giga 3, Cubase 5 sequencer. Performance Tool Midi all set to Through.

When I use the 14-VI**_all sample and enter a scale run in the key editor of cubase the samples just won't play in time. It get's even worse when I use some 6-KB samples on another Midi channel. I feel that the start time of the different notes are not the same and the bass will be OK at some positions and drag or speed at others. It seems that the lower I set the notes that the more they drag. I have looked for over 2 hours to find something in the forum about this, but could find any information. I would like to know if the problem has to be in the configuration or if the start times of the samples aren't set right.
If I play a 8th stac sample at 120 the same note, it is tight like a metronom, if i do a octave interval with the same, the lower note drags. Hope somebody can help!

Assuming that there is nothing wrong with your system (and you have no delays set) then be aware that lower strings (fatter, less tension) do take longer to sound. If it is a problem, just move the notes that you don't like earlier. Regarding the violins, you need to use the 0sus sounds, which have a faster attack.

  • Thanks, I'll try it. I've been using Short and stac samples. Only the strange thing is that I feel that the individual samples have slightly different start times, which makes it impossible to get even a 8th note melody line played staight. I really hope that I must be doing something wrong or I would be very frustratad with VSL. Any other suggestions welcome.

  • how is your latency set? On my mac, due to reduced horsepower, I have to increase latency a little to get all the sounds that I want without pops and crackles. This does mean that in real time the notes are delayed.
