  • What does hauteur réelle mean in relation to tubular bells?

    Hello,

I've been studying Ravel's orchestration for Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and in the final movement (The Great Gate of Kiev) he uses a tubular bell in Eb. Underneath this, in brackets, it says "hauteur réelle" and I'm having trouble finding out its meaning. I did a Babel Fish translation but it translates as 'real height', which doesn't make much sense.

Does anyone here know what it means? [*-)]

    Cheers,
    Mobius.

  • Just a guess: "Actual pitch".

  • Thank you, I think you're right. I just consulted an old French dictionary that was gathering dust on my shelf of unloved books. [:)]

  • Yes, this is correct; well done [:D]
