  • Layering Chamber Strings

If I may, another Chamber Strings question:

If I layer the VI-6 perf_leg f + porta violins with the VI-6 modwheel blend violins, will I get phasing problems?

ie. do they share the same samples? (even a few shared samples could cause problems).

I need the expressiveness of the modwheel blend patches, combined with the fluid note-transitions of the legato patches. I have used this successfully with VSL VI-14 perf_leg f + porta and GOS Grand Sustains - two totally different sample sets, of course, so no nasty flanging.

Will this work with two Chamber String patches?

    Thanks,
    Mike.

  • I've found that you can avoid phasing by panning the 1st Violins sharply to the left, and the 2nd Violins a little bit left of center, also, making the 1st slightly louder...

  • Thanks for the reply, BW, but what happens when you layer the two specific Chamber Strings patches I mentioned, both panned to the same position?

I am trying to establish if the two patches share the same samples.
    Hopefully, they don't!

    Thanks,
    Mike.

  • The interval samples in the legato instrument will be different, definitely. But there is a sustained vibrato set of samples used for legato line beginnings, and that one is possibly the same.

Why don't you look for yourself? Just identify the notes and track down the sample name. The sus vib patch is the uppermost keyswitch on the legato samples, I think, anyway on the gigastudio version of the strings. And you'd need to look at both layers of the already layered 'blend' patch. (I don't use that one, and am not willing to reload it all to check for you).

  • Yeah, I don't have the Chamber Strings Library, so you should go ahead and do a test yourself!

I'm pretty sure there's numerous ways to avoid phasing in general though.

  • Thanks for the responses.

This is part of my pre-purchase research for Chamber Strings.

    Best,
    Mike.

  • OH! Sorry, thought you had the library already. Well, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that they probably aren't the same samples, but I'm not %100. If you haven't gotten a response in a few more days, you should go ahead and PM one of the VSL guys.
