  • Chamber strings looped?

    Evening all

I am poised to purchase the Chamber Strings at 30% discount, but would like to check on one vital (for me, anyway) issue:

Are the transition samples in the perf. legato instruments looped, or do they suffer the same early death as my Opus 1 Perf.Leg Strings?

If not looped, are they at least long enough for usable phrasing at average tempi?

Thanks to Beat Kaufmann for the very helpful articulation demos. [:)]

    Mike.

  • Not sure what you mean by "transition": here is the structure of the chamber strings legato violins: there is a fast and a slow version, with the difference being in the early part of the sample, the speed of change to the target note from the prior note. If that is what you mean by transition, then it is extremely short even in the slow version ( a fraction of a second). The full duration of all of the keyswitched samples of interval steps is medium length, about 4 seconds. There are also two sustained note samples of about 8 or more seconds, which you can get by keyswitches.

The only uniqueness in the legato instruments is at the sample start, the note transition from one note to the next, appropriate imo for passages at fast to medium speed. For long sustained notes, written as legato (but not played that way in real life because players have to change bows) I'd just use a sustained note at full nominal duration from some other instrument.

  • I think that Mike was referring to the length of the note following the "transition". As I don't have Chamber Strings yet, I can't tell you, however, I don't know of any transition notes that are looped. [:(]

  • I don't believe the legato samples are looped in Chamber Strings, but the GS3 updated .art files for Chamber Strings offers the 'mod-wheel blend to sustain patch' solution:

    _PERF-LEGATO
    SUS-BLEND
    VI-6_perf-leg_p_slow+SB
    VI-6_perf-leg_p_fast+SB
    VI-6_perf-leg_f_slow+SB
    VI-6_perf-leg_f_fast+SB
    VI-6_perf-leg_f_porta+SB
    VI-6_perf-leg_f_sul+SB
    VI-6_perf-det+SB
    VI-6_perf-leg_p+f_slow_vel+SB
    VI-6_perf-leg_p+f_fast_vel+SB

Might not be a perfect solution for all, but it is a functional way to achieve a longer sustain on the target note.

If you haven't already, see the string on GS3 .art files in the giga forum...

  • Thanks for the replies.

Yes, I was refering to the length of the destination notes, not the tiny "slides" (I think they're actually part of the destination sample).

It seems that 4 seconds is the concensus?

So some form of crossfading will still be needed. I was hoping to avoid this - it's fiddly.

Are the ''modwheel blend to sustain" patches available in the Halion format?

But this doesn't alter the fact that this is a superb string lib - if you're after a smaller sound with more individual player-characteristics coming through - which is just what I'm after.

Agreed! Just ordered the GS version for myself, and can't wait for them to arrive. The depth of expressiveness and character of this library makes it one of the best, as far as I can tell ("Illness and Recovery" on the demo page is my all-time favorite sample library demo).

I've been waiting a long long time for the price to drop a bit...

  • Hi Mike,

yes, the sus-blends are available in all supported formats.

  • Thanks Paul.

Could you give me a link to download these Halion sus-blend patches?

I tried the downloads section, but only found Opus1 Halion patches (which I already have).

    Thanks you.
    Mike.

  • Hi Mike,

I will check that again, but the sus-blends should be in the downloadable HALion programs you find in your user area, for all Horizon products, including OPUS 1. They are to be found in the Performance Legato section, you find the basic inctruments, combinations, sus blends and more.

  • [:)] Thanks for the quick response, Paul.

    Just to clarify:
I have not purchased Chamber Strings yet, so maybe I am only eligible for the sus-blend update patches for Opus 1 perf leg instruments. (unless one sus-blend patch works for the whole Horizon series?)

I want to download the sus-blend patches for Opus 1 now, and then I will download the Chamber Strings sus-blend patches after I have purchased the Chamber Strings (very soon!).

Please let me know where to find these sus-blend patches.

    Thanks again,
    Mike.

  • Hi Mike,

they are included (or integrated) in the downloads for HALion here:
