  • Classical sampler composers

    I am just wondering, in light of the posts by various film composer-people like Peter Alexander and Maartin and others who are using the VSL to do unique new film music --

    are there - on the other hand - ANY purely classical composers who are using the Vienna Symphonic Library just to do their own music? I kind of wonder and feel like I'm alone.

    To me, this library is the greatest thing a classical composer could ever find, especially if he knows nothing about practicality and popularity with orchestra music directors (two of my main problems).

    I also think that if many of the great classical composers of the past had had something like these fantastic expressive sounds at their beck and call, any time of the day or night, they would have loved them. The greatest use of this library is not to undercut orchestras, but to give the individual composer the ability to use the sounds of the orchestra, the greatest of all musical instruments (besides the human voice) without delay (of a lifetime) or compromise (like sucking up to what is currently popular with the classical music establishment).

    To create orchestral music and sell it directly - for the individual composer's benefit, instead of a record producer's outrageous monetary take - would be a great advance in music, something that has never happened before. There needs to be a record label that sells such music - new compositions for orchestra done without any compromise, by individual artists, using the great Vienna Symphonic Library.

    You're not alone William... I bought VSL to perform my own music. I might also use it for film, but it wasn't the main purpose of buying it... [H]

    You're not alone - I'm just doing orchestral music as a kind of hobby (and of course to impress my friends - hihi ). In "normal life" I'm a biology-student - so it took me mounths to earn the money for this great masterpiece of sample-content. Btw: I know a lot of people composing o-music in there free-time.

  • I'm another purely "classical" composer, but I don't own VSL yet. I'm waiting for QLSO to come out so I can compare them before I dish out the cash.
    I'm planning on selling my music online as well, once I create a new webpage. Does anyone have any idea what sort of market there is for this?
    On mp3.com the top of the charts are all composers that are long gone. And a lot of the popular stuff is new age fluff.

    I suppose my music leans toward the romantic era style. If anyone's interested, check out my music on my mp3 page. There's a range of stuff there but The Knights of Sidalcea is probably the closest to what I'm doing now. Recently I finished a 40 min concerto for piano and orchestra that I'm very proud of. I'm waiting to get new samples so I can make a good version of it.

  • I also wish to sell serious music directly, because I for one am tired that the only people who make money with music are either rock musicians or film composers.

    I believe that any composer who writes a thousand bars without repeats deserves at least a chance to make some money off his work and should never be content with the typical lot of "classical" composers, who are supposed to shut up and accept being ignored until they die.

    I am very alienated from the current musical establishments, and am trying to sell music directly without being taken advantage of by record companies. Mp3. com is not the way to do it, because they really exist for rock music or new age or other pop things. So it must be done more directly, probably by the composer himself. But there is an opportunity today with the internet and "artist" programs on Amazon.com, etc. At least this gives a destination for music that prevously would be shut up in a drawer until a hundred years later.

  • I don't think I share quite the same view with regard to film or rock music. It is true that 90% of film or rock music sucks, but you can say exactly the same thing about "classical" music, or any genre of music for that matter. 90% of all art is trash.

    I actually listen to a very broad range of music. Practically every genre except rap. But my favorite is definitely orchestral music. I do find myself listening to it more and more though, especially since it's getting harder and harder to find good music in other genres. "Image" these days seems to be taking the place of "talent". Is this the trend in other countries as well? Maybe people in other countries have longer attention spans. I certainly hope so!

  • I don't see myself as a film composer. I see myself as a composer, first. I do orchestrations, original works, etc. As I learn the library, Vienna is a tremendous base for all I'm writing.

  • I also am not a film music composer and probably one of the few using samples who do not even consider writing music for films or any other commercial projects. I did hear quite some others non commercial oriented contemporary composers, which produce their works with samples. Since it is very difficult for us to have our works performed –people wants only hear Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikowsky and……John Williams……, it is a good way to be able to communicate our works to an audience.
