  • Synchron percussion: manually dampen timpani rolls and hits on release

    Hi, I just started out finally updating my rig to make use oif the Sychron Player patches of the Synchron Percussion library.

    Is there a way to manually mute or at least tame the release samples on a modwheel-crossfaded timpani roll? I strugle bit time to accomplish a good sounding situation where I want to end a creshendo on pitch with a strong single note hit on another.

    The roll will always ring or even end with a strong final hit of the drum in the pich I started with. This does not mix well :)

    In the past, I had found a way to manually mute the release sample played when lifing the key on the roll... but I have been unsuccessful replicating this with the new player... and to be honest I also lost the expression map settings which seemed to make it work on the original library inside the VI player.

    I was also wondering whether there were any plans to include real muted release samples which I could use to simulate dampening the drum on note release for the single hits.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.


  • Hi Mirai,

    you can set the Release to a lower value in the PERFORM tab (if it is not listed there, it is always in the CONTROL tab).
    You can also alter the release value with automation (default: CC23 default).

    thank you for the hint. I thought I had tried that and the result was that it chopped the sample on key-up (even sort of clicking at the most extreme) but the release sample that is triggered right after would still play back.

    I will try again later today and report back.


  • There is also a different release control in the "EDIT" tab, but this controls the release of the sample itself, not only the release-sample (and can result in the behavior you described).
    Just alter the Release in the PERFORM / CONTROL tab and I think you should get the desired result.

    dod some further testing. Unfortunately, no change. Release sample is playing no matter what. I have tried everything...

    1. Changed the Release value in the PERFORM section: 0 results in clicking but release sample of the XFade patch in the Timpani is still played.
    2. In the CONTROL section by modifying CC23: same behavioru as mentioned above.
    3. in the Endit section... strangely seems to have absolutely zero impact on playback whatsoever
    4. Also tried to set the "Release Voice Limit" to 0 in the hope this would kill the final release.... nope. Doesn't.

    Anything else I can do?

    Right now I have reverted back to my initial solution to the problem by quickly dialing bacvk the VelXF controller just before switching to the single hit.... but that sounds strange.

    My old method without the release sampel being played sounded much better in the VI version :/

    I'm afraid there is no option to switch off Release Samples in Synchron Player. That's something that might be a good idea to add. I will check with our team!

    ok. I was worried this might be the case. Thanks for looking into adding this future back in - this was possible with the old player engine, wasn't it?

    Even better would be to have a dapened release on demand, so one would be able to switch between a "let it ring" and "stopped" release at the end of a roll.

    Judging from the recordings you already have the dampened single hits. But those are fixed in length. Maybe these can just be chopped up to get the dampened release type from them extracted? ...

    Since the timpani is recorded in a pretty lively acoustic environment, you won't really be able to dampen the drum - but rather the response of the room. This usually sounds pretty bad.

    But perhaps we could consider a sort of release-sample specific envelope to the Synchron Player in the future... we'll keep that in mind.
