  • wich library is the best to start?

    hi!

i´m new to this forum, and i´m not a vsl user yet[;)]
i want to buy a vsl library next 2-3 weeks and don´t know wich one is the best for me!

the music i´m doing is straight pop music, and i want to use the vsl specially for ballads in the style of faith hill etc....

so please could anyone give some tips wich library is the best for me?

    thanx[;)][/b]

  • The biggest bang for the buck would be Opus 1 or even the Opus 1+2 bundle. The performance legato instruments are probably what you're after since they're the most realistic sounding instruments in the entire sampling world. Opus 1 gives you perfleg instruments in all the main groups: Strings, Winds, Brass. I have used the strings on several records with Bobby Caldwell, Aaron Neville, and Corey Clark. These clients were floored at the realism and quality of sound.

Other VSL packages (1st Edition, Pro and various Horizon) are a massive expansion of the basics of Opus 1 that have tons of various articulations and performance elements to satisfy the ultimate requirements of orchestral renderings. You can always upgrade but it's probably overkill for your present needs. Once you have Opus 1(+2) you will be able to guage very easily if you want to expand.

  • For the typical pop- or R'nB-"strings", several people like the Chamber Strings a lot (available as a dedicated package in our Horizon Series). They are less "cosy" as the large section and have a highly appreciated "edge", especially in the attacks, when used properly.

  • I don't own the Chamber Strings but you should look into them for sure. I use mainly the (1st Ed.) perfleg strings and the modwheel layered strings (which crossfade between p, mf, f, and so on.) Also you should know that ALL perfleg instruments are monophonic (1 note at a time only) though they are stereo samples. So for string pads I use the modwheel layers. For polyphonic textures I use perfleg.

  • thanx for all your replies!
    i´ll have a look[;)]

    kind regards

  • Chamber strings really sit well within a pop type mix. That edge cuts through even when you have alot going on. String sections on there own I think the Opus family would be better.

    2 cents. [[;)]]
