  • Preset for WAVE S1.

    Hi VSL users,

    I bought the Native pack to use WAVE S1 with VSL.

    Do you have some presets for me?

    I would like to know how to use this tool for Violins,violas,cellos...

  • Fred, it is not a good idea to think about the S1 as a "preset-machine". You will need to change those (very few) parameters for each and every scenario, even if you use the same instrument. But it's really easy.

    Actually, you mostly need to adjust the two values for "Width" (where 1 is the original stereo width of our recordings, 0 is mono) and "Rotation", which allows you to adjust the L/R-positioning of a signal.

    As the perceived "broadness" of an instrument or an ensemble gets smaller and smaller as you move away from it, it is not uncommon to collapse a string-ensemble to 60-70% of its original width. Solo-instruments can get as narrow as 23-30%, when we talk about a common orchestral setting with a huge stage and a virtual listening-position about 10 rows back in the audience. The positioning is completely up to you, of course.

    Be careful with the different tools which transform the pan.
    Each time you make a modification, take care to verify the original sound.
    Often we loose the quality and the richness of the sound.

    Of course in case of a big orch you think it's important to place almost in mono the differents instruments.

    But the final result, if it's correct in the placement, is sometimes poor in dynamic.
    that's my experience.
    We meet the same problem with the placement ( it calls "stage") in the Altiverb: it is almost impossible to keep the good quality of our prefered library in an exhaustive and multiple placement with this reverb…
    Altiverb is maybe the best convolution reverb actually, but dangerous for this tool "stage"!

    Yes, it is certainly a way; it is the way I use; and i think (hope) that it is a high quality way.

    Yes, it is - 'Width' and 'Pos' are directly equivalent to the Width/Rotation settings in S1 and work exactly the same.

    So if you can rotate with Pos then how are you using Gigapulse - for front to back? Or do you position with Gigapulse as well?

    Or just describe how you are placing things (I guess is what I'm asking.)
