    I thought this would be a good topic for the tapping the forum's collective brain:

    Looks like I'll be moving from our space where we've been for almost seven years to a new location -- from 49th Street and Broadway to either DUMBO or Chinatown. The new space will require some construction, so I'm doing research on studio design.

    Can anyone point me in a good direction? I want to make a ProTools HD3 based 5.1 surround mix room linked to an 100 square foot recording space. Budget will be limited, but I want to get the basics right -- proper ventilation, reflection control, adequate sound proofing, etc. There are a lot of companies that will offer expensive acoustic consulting services, but I want more of a do-it-yourself approach as I will be mostly doing-it-myself. I'm sure many people on this forum have dealt with these issues before.

    Check out JimScheffler.com. Jim is an LA studio engineer who knows acoustics and is into designing spaces. He does all the math, tells you what you need to do and will fine tune your room once you're done. Jim records regularly with the LSO over at Abbey Road as well as working with the studio cats in LA. I'm hiring him to do our 5.1 Music Technology room at Wheaton College (IL). Highly recommended.

    Wheaton, eh? I had a high school buddy of mine that went there. Mark Holmstrom was his name. Decent musician, tho I think he ended up going another way in the end. Dentisty, maybe. You wouldn't have run into him there, by any chance? He probably graduated in 1990...

    I've had...discussions with Ethan. His traps are great, but he and I disagree on psychoacoustics.
